FAA Flight Planning with Sectional Charts 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the standard scale of a FAA VFR Sectional Aeronautical Chart?
- 1:250,000
- 1:500,000 (Correct answer)
- 1:1,000,000
- 1:125,000
Correct answer: 1:500,000
FAA Sectional Aeronautical Charts are published at a scale of 1:500,000, meaning 1 inch on the chart equals approximately 6.86 nautical miles on the ground.
Question 2: On a sectional chart, the graphic scale bar allows pilots to measure distances in what units?
- Statute miles only
- Nautical miles and statute miles (Correct answer)
- Kilometers and nautical miles
- Nautical miles only
Correct answer: Nautical miles and statute miles
The graphic scale bar on a sectional chart provides markings for both nautical miles and statute miles, allowing pilots to measure route distances in either unit.
Question 3: How often are FAA Sectional Aeronautical Charts updated and reissued?
- Every 28 days
- Every 56 days (approximately every 8 weeks) (Correct answer)
- Every 6 months
- Annually
Correct answer: Every 56 days (approximately every 8 weeks)
FAA Sectional Charts are updated on a 56-day cycle to reflect changes in airspace, NAVAIDs, airports, and obstacles.
Question 4: On a sectional chart, the isogonic lines (lines of equal magnetic variation) are typically shown in what color and style?
- Dashed blue lines running roughly north-south
- Dashed magenta lines running roughly north-south (Correct answer)
- Solid brown diagonal lines
- Dashed green lines parallel to the equator
Correct answer: Dashed magenta lines running roughly north-south
Isogonic lines (lines of equal magnetic variation) are shown as dashed magenta lines running roughly north-south on FAA sectional charts, labeled with their variation value.
Question 5: On a sectional chart, an 'E' following a magnetic variation value (e.g., '10°E') means what for navigation?
- Easterly variation means magnetic north is east of true north — subtract variation from true course to get magnetic course (Correct answer)
- Easterly variation means add degrees to compass heading
- Easterly variation only applies when flying eastbound
- Easterly means compass deviation is positive
Correct answer: Easterly variation means magnetic north is east of true north — subtract variation from true course to get magnetic course
Easterly magnetic variation means that magnetic north lies east of true north; pilots subtract easterly variation from true course to obtain the magnetic course.
Question 6: What does the chart publication date printed on a sectional chart margin tell a pilot?
- When the chart was first surveyed
- The date after which the chart is no longer current for IFR use
- The effective date and expiration date of the chart for legal VFR navigation (Correct answer)
- Only the printing date, with no regulatory significance
Correct answer: The effective date and expiration date of the chart for legal VFR navigation
The effective date and expiration date printed on a sectional chart margin define the period during which the chart is considered current and legally usable for VFR navigation.
