  1. What is the national speed limit for a bus or coach on a dual carriageway?

    Answer: 60 mph

Buses and coaches are permitted to travel at up to 60 mph on dual carriageways, which is the same as for LGVs over 7.5 tonnes. This is lower than the 70 mph car limit on dual carriageways.

  2. A PCV driver approaches a hump-back bridge. What should they be aware of?

Answer: Reduced visibility at the crest of the bridge may hide oncoming vehicles — reduce speed and prepare to give way

Hump-back bridges restrict forward visibility at the crest. PCV drivers should reduce speed to be able to stop for any oncoming or crossing traffic hidden by the bridge's shape. The width of the bridge may also restrict large vehicles.

  3. What does a double yellow line along the kerb mean?

Answer: No waiting at any time on any day

Double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time on any day of the year. Unlike single yellow lines, they have no time restriction and apply continuously. However, loading/unloading restrictions are shown separately by kerb marks.

  4. What does a sign at a coach park showing a 'T' with a coach symbol mean?

Answer: Tourist coach parking — reserved for coaches serving tourists and passengers

A 'T' with a coach symbol typically indicates tourist coach parking designated for coaches carrying tourist groups. PCV drivers should use these designated areas to keep town centres accessible.

  5. What does a sign reading 'GIVE WAY TO ONCOMING VEHICLES' with a red arrow and a white arrow mean?

Answer: You must give way to oncoming traffic — the road is too narrow for two vehicles to pass simultaneously

This sign indicates a narrow section where two vehicles cannot pass simultaneously. The red arrow shows your direction and means you must give way; the white arrow shows oncoming traffic has priority.

  6. What does a sign showing 'MAX HEIGHT 4.5m' (or a specific height measurement) under a bridge or structure mean?

Answer: The maximum permitted height of vehicles passing under that structure

Height restriction signs show the maximum vehicle height permitted to pass under a structure. PCV drivers must know their vehicle's height and must not attempt to drive under any structure if their vehicle exceeds the stated limit.
