Tableau Mapping and Geographic Analysis 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What built-in geographic role does Tableau automatically assign to a dimension field named 'State' containing US state names?
- ZIP Code/Postal Code
- State/Province (Correct answer)
- Country/Region
- City
Correct answer: State/Province
Tableau recognizes field names like 'State' and automatically assigns the State/Province geographic role, enabling mapping at the state level.
Question 2: Which type of Tableau map visualization colors entire geographic regions (such as states or countries) based on a measure value?
- Symbol map
- Density map
- Filled map (Correct answer)
- Point distribution map
Correct answer: Filled map
A filled map (choropleth) colors entire geographic polygons such as countries, states, or counties based on a measure value using a color gradient.
Question 3: In Tableau Desktop, what does the 'unknown' indicator that appears in the lower-right corner of a map view signify?
- The background map tiles failed to load
- Some location values could not be matched in Tableau's geocoding database (Correct answer)
- The geographic role has not been assigned to the field
- The data source connection has been lost
Correct answer: Some location values could not be matched in Tableau's geocoding database
The unknown indicator appears when Tableau cannot match one or more location values to entries in its internal geocoding database.
Question 4: What geographic role should you assign to a field containing US 5-digit ZIP codes in Tableau?
- City
- County
- ZIP Code/Postal Code (Correct answer)
- State/Province
Correct answer: ZIP Code/Postal Code
The ZIP Code/Postal Code geographic role tells Tableau to geocode the field as postal codes, enabling mapping at the ZIP code level of granularity.
Question 5: Which map provider is available as a built-in background map integration in Tableau Desktop?
- Google Maps
- Apple Maps
- Mapbox (Correct answer)
- HERE Maps
Correct answer: Mapbox
Tableau integrates natively with Mapbox, allowing users to apply custom Mapbox map styles as background maps in Tableau Desktop.
Question 6: What happens in the Data pane when you assign a geographic role to a dimension field in Tableau?
- The field is converted from a dimension to a measure
- Tableau generates Latitude and Longitude fields in the Measures section (Correct answer)
- The field is automatically placed on the Rows shelf
- A new geographic hierarchy folder is created
Correct answer: Tableau generates Latitude and Longitude fields in the Measures section
When a geographic role is assigned, Tableau automatically generates corresponding Latitude and Longitude fields in the Measures section of the Data pane.
Question 7: To create a dual-axis map in Tableau Desktop with two independent mark layers, what step must be performed after adding both measure pills to the view?
- Apply the same color to both layers
- Synchronize the axes (Correct answer)
- Set both mark types to Circle
- Enable 'Show Map Layers' for both axes
Correct answer: Synchronize the axes
Synchronizing axes ensures both mark layers share the same coordinate space and scale, allowing them to display correctly overlaid on a single map.
