STAR Analyzing Student Growth Reports 3 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: A class Growth Report shows that 8 of 25 students are classified as 'Urgent Intervention' in STAR Early Literacy. What is the teacher's most appropriate first step?
- Wait until the next testing window to confirm the scores
- Form a small intervention group targeting the shared skill gaps identified in the report (Correct answer)
- Refer all 8 students for special education evaluation immediately
- Administer the STAR test again to all 8 students
Correct answer: Form a small intervention group targeting the shared skill gaps identified in the report
Forming targeted small groups based on shared skill gaps is the most immediate, instructionally responsive action following 'Urgent Intervention' classification.
Question 2: On the STAR Growth Report, the 'Observed Growth' column reflects which of the following?
- The growth projected from the student's starting score
- The actual change in Scaled Score between two test administrations (Correct answer)
- The national average growth for the student's grade
- The growth needed to reach the next proficiency level
Correct answer: The actual change in Scaled Score between two test administrations
Observed Growth is the actual measured change in Scaled Score from one test administration to the next.
Question 3: A student's STAR Math Scaled Score increased by 30 points, but the Expected Growth for that student was 45 points. How should this be categorized?
- Exceeding Growth
- Met Growth
- Below Growth / On Watch or Intervention (Correct answer)
- Insufficient data to categorize
Correct answer: Below Growth / On Watch or Intervention
When Observed Growth is less than Expected Growth, the student falls into the 'Below Growth' category, triggering watch or intervention status.
Question 4: Which STAR report feature allows educators to filter students by their current growth status (e.g., Exceeding, Met, Watch, Intervention)?
- Instructional Planning Report
- Growth Status Filter in the Class Growth Report (Correct answer)
- Benchmark Universe Report
- Learning Progression Report
Correct answer: Growth Status Filter in the Class Growth Report
The Class Growth Report includes a Growth Status Filter that lets educators sort students into growth categories for targeted instructional grouping.
Question 5: A school counselor wants to identify students whose growth has accelerated significantly — outpacing expected growth by the widest margin. Which metric should she focus on?
- Percentile Rank
- Grade Equivalent
- Growth Index (Correct answer)
- Instructional Level
Correct answer: Growth Index
The Growth Index quantifies how much a student's Observed Growth exceeds or falls below Expected Growth, making it ideal for identifying accelerated learners.
Question 6: Why is it important to set a baseline (fall) test before interpreting STAR growth data mid-year?
- STAR tests are only valid when administered in the fall
- Growth is calculated as the difference between two scores, requiring a starting point (Correct answer)
- Baseline scores determine which test form students will receive later
- Mid-year scores are not stored unless a fall score exists
Correct answer: Growth is calculated as the difference between two scores, requiring a starting point
Growth requires two data points; without a fall baseline, there is no starting score from which to measure change.
Question 7: A student's STAR Reading report shows a Grade Equivalent (GE) of 5.4 in October of 3rd grade. What does this indicate?
- The student is reading at a 3rd grade level
- The student is reading at a level typical of a student in the 4th month of 5th grade (Correct answer)
- The student's score exceeds all 5th grade benchmarks
- The student should be placed in 5th grade
Correct answer: The student is reading at a level typical of a student in the 4th month of 5th grade
A Grade Equivalent of 5.4 means the student's performance matches the average performance of a student in the 4th month of 5th grade.
