SIA Door Conflict Management — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the primary goal of conflict management for a door supervisor?
- To win every confrontation
- To resolve or de-escalate situations peacefully, using physical force only as a last resort (Correct answer)
- To demonstrate physical dominance
- To remove everyone involved from the premises
Correct answer: To resolve or de-escalate situations peacefully, using physical force only as a last resort
The primary goal is to resolve situations peacefully through communication and de-escalation. Physical intervention should only be used as a last resort when all other options have been exhausted.
Question 2: What does 'de-escalation' mean in conflict management?
- Using a staircase to move people
- Reducing the intensity of a conflict through communication techniques (Correct answer)
- Escalating force to match the aggressor
- Calling for police backup immediately
Correct answer: Reducing the intensity of a conflict through communication techniques
De-escalation involves using verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to calm a situation, reduce tension, and prevent a conflict from becoming physical or more serious.
Question 3: Which of the following is an effective de-escalation technique?
- Shouting louder than the aggressive person
- Speaking calmly, using the person's name, and actively listening to their concerns (Correct answer)
- Crossing your arms and staring at them
- Turning your back on them
Correct answer: Speaking calmly, using the person's name, and actively listening to their concerns
Speaking calmly, using the person's name (if known), maintaining appropriate eye contact, and actively listening demonstrates respect and can defuse tension. Aggressive or dismissive body language escalates conflict.
Question 4: What is the 'attitude model' used in conflict management?
- A modelling agency's recruitment process
- A framework showing how attitudes and behaviours influence conflict outcomes, often using a conflict escalation ladder (Correct answer)
- A customer satisfaction survey
- A method for assessing a person's dress code
Correct answer: A framework showing how attitudes and behaviours influence conflict outcomes, often using a conflict escalation ladder
The attitude model (or behavioural model) illustrates how a person's attitude can escalate from calm to aggressive, and how the door supervisor's attitude and behaviour directly influences whether the situation improves or worsens.
Question 5: What are 'trigger factors' in conflict situations?
- The weapons an aggressor might use
- Words, actions, or situations that can cause a person's behaviour to escalate (Correct answer)
- The reasons a venue is licensed
- Medical conditions that cause aggression
Correct answer: Words, actions, or situations that can cause a person's behaviour to escalate
Trigger factors are things that provoke or escalate aggressive behaviour — such as personal insults, invading personal space, aggressive body language, or making someone feel disrespected or embarrassed.
Question 6: Why is it important to maintain a professional demeanour when dealing with an aggressive customer?
- To appear superior
- Because remaining calm and professional helps de-escalate the situation and provides legal protection if force is needed (Correct answer)
- To impress other customers
- To avoid doing any paperwork
Correct answer: Because remaining calm and professional helps de-escalate the situation and provides legal protection if force is needed
Remaining calm and professional helps de-escalate the situation, models appropriate behaviour, and — if the situation does escalate — demonstrates in any subsequent legal proceedings that you acted reasonably.
