OAE Early Childhood Education Child Development and Learning 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: According to Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, the 'zone of proximal development' (ZPD) refers to:
- The range of tasks a child can complete independently without any assistance
- The gap between what a child can do alone and what they can do with guidance (Correct answer)
- The physical space in a classroom designated for peer collaboration
- The developmental stage at which children begin to use symbolic thinking
Correct answer: The gap between what a child can do alone and what they can do with guidance
The ZPD is the distance between a child's independent capability and what they can achieve with skilled support or scaffolding.
Question 2: A 4-year-old insists that a tall, thin glass holds more water than a short, wide glass even after watching the same amount poured between them. This behavior reflects a lack of:
- Object permanence
- Conservation (Correct answer)
- Egocentrism
- Centration avoidance
Correct answer: Conservation
Conservation is the understanding that quantity remains the same despite changes in shape or appearance, a concept typically mastered during the concrete operational stage.
Question 3: Which attachment pattern is characterized by a child who shows little distress when separated from a caregiver and avoids the caregiver upon reunion?
- Secure attachment
- Anxious-ambivalent attachment
- Avoidant attachment (Correct answer)
- Disorganized attachment
Correct answer: Avoidant attachment
Avoidant attachment typically develops when caregivers are consistently unresponsive, leading children to suppress attachment needs and minimize distress.
Question 4: During the sensorimotor stage, infants primarily learn through:
- Logical reasoning and symbolic representation
- Social comparison with peers
- Direct physical interaction with their environment (Correct answer)
- Abstract thinking and hypothesis testing
Correct answer: Direct physical interaction with their environment
In Piaget's sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years), infants construct knowledge through sensory experiences and motor actions on objects.
Question 5: Which theorist proposed that children progress through eight psychosocial stages, each involving a central conflict that must be resolved for healthy development?
- Jean Piaget
- Erik Erikson (Correct answer)
- Lev Vygotsky
- B.F. Skinner
Correct answer: Erik Erikson
Erikson's psychosocial theory outlines eight stages from infancy to old age, each defined by a conflict such as trust vs. mistrust or autonomy vs. shame and doubt.
Question 6: A toddler who successfully navigates around furniture to reach a toy is demonstrating which type of motor skill?
- Fine motor skill
- Gross motor skill (Correct answer)
- Manipulative motor skill
- Perceptual motor skill
Correct answer: Gross motor skill
Gross motor skills involve large muscle groups and whole-body movements such as walking, running, climbing, and navigating space.
Question 7: Which of the following best describes 'scaffolding' in early childhood education?
- Arranging classroom furniture to support independent exploration
- Providing temporary, adjustable support to help children accomplish tasks just beyond their current ability (Correct answer)
- Creating detailed lesson plans based on state learning standards
- Assessing children's progress using standardized developmental checklists
Correct answer: Providing temporary, adjustable support to help children accomplish tasks just beyond their current ability
Scaffolding, rooted in Vygotsky's theory, involves offering just enough support to help a child succeed at a challenging task, then gradually withdrawing that support.
