New Zealand Motorbike Driving Test New Zealand Motorbike Driving Riding in Adverse Conditions 3 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: When riding in strong crosswinds on an open New Zealand highway, which body position best helps stabilise the motorcycle?
- Lean into the wind with a relaxed grip
- Sit upright and grip the tank firmly with your knees (Correct answer)
- Lean away from the wind to counterbalance
- Extend your outside leg to act as a stabiliser
Correct answer: Sit upright and grip the tank firmly with your knees
Gripping the tank with your knees lowers your centre of gravity and reduces the wind's leverage on your body, improving stability.
Question 2: You are riding in New Zealand and encounter a flooded road section. What is the correct action?
- Cross quickly to minimise water exposure
- Stop and assess the depth before deciding whether to cross (Correct answer)
- Follow a car through at a safe distance
- Turn around immediately without stopping
Correct answer: Stop and assess the depth before deciding whether to cross
You must assess water depth first — even shallow-looking flood water can conceal deep sections, debris, or undercut road surfaces that are dangerous for motorcycles.
Question 3: In New Zealand, when is aquaplaning most likely to occur on a motorcycle?
- During light drizzle on a dry road
- On standing water at higher speeds with worn tyres (Correct answer)
- On a freshly swept dry road after rain
- During braking on a wet gravel shoulder
Correct answer: On standing water at higher speeds with worn tyres
Aquaplaning occurs when the tyre cannot displace water fast enough, which is more likely at speed, on standing water, and with reduced tread depth.
Question 4: After riding through prolonged heavy rain in New Zealand, which mechanical check is most important before your next journey?
- Check the fuel level
- Inspect the chain lubrication and brake effectiveness (Correct answer)
- Re-torque the wheel nuts
- Check the tyre pressure cold
Correct answer: Inspect the chain lubrication and brake effectiveness
Rain washes chain lubricant away and water on brake discs temporarily reduces braking power, making both checks critical for safety after wet riding.
Question 5: On a cold New Zealand morning, which road surface area is most likely to be icy and should be avoided?
- The middle of a busy road
- Shaded areas under trees or bridges (Correct answer)
- Freshly painted road markings
- The raised centre crown of the road
Correct answer: Shaded areas under trees or bridges
Shaded areas under trees and bridges freeze first and thaw last because sunlight cannot reach them to melt ice.
Question 6: When a New Zealand motorcyclist rides in snow or sleet, what is the primary risk to steering control?
- Increased engine drag due to cold air
- Reduced tyre contact patch grip on snow or ice (Correct answer)
- Visor frosting blocking forward vision
- Fuel vaporisation in the carburettor
Correct answer: Reduced tyre contact patch grip on snow or ice
Snow and ice drastically reduce tyre grip, making it difficult to steer, brake, or accelerate without losing traction.
Question 7: In New Zealand, what does a 'Low Bridge Fog Warning' sign on a motorway indicate for motorcyclists?
- Reduced speed limit ahead due to bridge works
- Fog is present in low-lying areas near bridge crossings — extra caution required (Correct answer)
- Bridge surface may be icy and unstable
- A weight-restricted bridge requires a detour
Correct answer: Fog is present in low-lying areas near bridge crossings — extra caution required
Fog often collects in low-lying areas near bridges, and this warning sign means visibility may drop suddenly, requiring reduced speed and increased following distance.
