MMPI MMPI-A Adolescent Assessment 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: The MMPI-A-RF, a revised and restructured version of the MMPI-A, was published in 2016 and contains how many items?
- 338 items
- 241 items (Correct answer)
- 393 items
- 150 items
Correct answer: 241 items
The MMPI-A-RF was published in 2016 and contains 241 items, making it substantially shorter than the original 478-item MMPI-A.
Question 2: Which MMPI-A validity scale is designed to detect the tendency to answer 'True' inconsistently to pairs of items with opposite content?
- VRIN (Variable Response Inconsistency)
- TRIN (True Response Inconsistency) (Correct answer)
- F1 (Infrequency-1)
- L (Lie)
Correct answer: TRIN (True Response Inconsistency)
The TRIN scale identifies adolescents who respond inconsistently by giving 'True' responses to item pairs that have mutually exclusive content.
Question 3: Why was the MMPI-A content scale A-sch (Adolescent-School Problems) developed specifically for the adolescent form?
- Adults never experience school-related difficulties
- School performance and attitudes are developmentally central concerns unique to adolescence (Correct answer)
- It was adapted from an adult occupational stress scale
- School-related content is prohibited in adult personality instruments
Correct answer: School performance and attitudes are developmentally central concerns unique to adolescence
A-sch was created because academic functioning, school adjustment, and attitudes toward school are core aspects of adolescent development not applicable to adult assessments.
Question 4: What is the approximate minimum reading level required for an adolescent to complete the MMPI-A?
- 4th grade
- 6th grade (Correct answer)
- 8th grade
- 10th grade
Correct answer: 6th grade
The MMPI-A requires approximately a 6th-grade reading level, ensuring most adolescents in the 14–18 age range can meaningfully respond to the items.
Question 5: Which MMPI-A supplemental scale was specifically designed to measure psychological and social immaturity, including self-centeredness and poor judgment?
- ACK (Alcohol/Drug Problem Acknowledgment)
- PRO (Alcohol/Drug Problem Proneness)
- IMM (Immaturity) (Correct answer)
- MAC-R (MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale-Revised)
Correct answer: IMM (Immaturity)
The IMM (Immaturity) scale is unique to the MMPI-A and measures adolescent psychological immaturity, such as poor insight, self-centeredness, and limited social awareness.
Question 6: When interpreting MMPI-A scores, clinicians should use which normative comparison group?
- Adult norms from the MMPI-2 standardization sample
- The MMPI-A adolescent normative sample (Correct answer)
- General census-based population norms
- Norms derived from inpatient psychiatric adolescents
Correct answer: The MMPI-A adolescent normative sample
MMPI-A profiles must be compared against the adolescent-specific normative sample on which the instrument was developed and standardized.
Question 7: Elevated scores on the MMPI-A content scale A-fam (Adolescent-Family Problems) most strongly suggest:
- A history of parental divorce exclusively
- Significant family conflict, perceived lack of love, and family discord (Correct answer)
- Strong family cohesion and a supportive home environment
- Financial hardship within the family unit
Correct answer: Significant family conflict, perceived lack of love, and family discord
High A-fam scores indicate that the adolescent reports substantial family conflict, strained relationships, and a perceived lack of affection or understanding within the family.
