Bennett Mechanical Comprehension 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Why is an inclined plane a good lifting solution?
- The force required will be greater than the force required to directly lift the object.
- The force required will be less than the force required to directly lift the object. (Correct answer)
- The force required will be less than the force required to indirectly lift the object.
Correct answer: The force required will be less than the force required to directly lift the object.
An inclined plane is considered a good lifting solution because it acts as a simple machine, providing mechanical advantage. It allows you to move an object to a higher elevation by applying a smaller force over a longer distance, compared to lifting the object straight up against gravity, which would require a greater direct force.
Question 2: What is the mechanical energy conservation principle?
- As long as no other force is applied, an object's total mechanical energy (PE + KE) does not remain constant.
- As long as no other force is applied, an object's total mechanical energy (PE + KE) remains constant. (Correct answer)
- As long as other forces are applied, an object's total mechanical energy (PE + KE) remains constant.
Correct answer: As long as no other force is applied, an object's total mechanical energy (PE + KE) remains constant.
The principle of mechanical energy conservation states that in a system where only conservative forces are doing work, the total mechanical energy, which is the sum of an object's potential energy (PE) and kinetic energy (KE), remains constant. This means that energy can transform between potential and kinetic forms, but their sum stays the same, provided no non-conservative forces like friction or air resistance are acting.
Question 3: What are the two different types of mechanical energy?
- Nuclear energy
- Potential energy (Correct answer)
- Kinetic energy
- Solar energy
Correct answer: Potential energy
The two fundamental forms of mechanical energy are potential energy and kinetic energy. Potential energy is stored energy an object possesses due to its position or state, such as gravitational potential energy or elastic potential energy. Kinetic energy, on the other hand, is the energy an object possesses due to its motion.
Question 4: _______ friction occurs when two surfaces
- Nuclear
- Potential
- Kinetic (Correct answer)
- Solar
Correct answer: Kinetic
Kinetic friction, also known as dynamic friction, is the force that opposes the relative motion between two surfaces that are sliding against each other. It acts when an object is already in motion, distinguishing it from static friction, which opposes the initiation of motion.
Question 5: Torque is proportional to _____ and _____ .
- Distance (Correct answer)
- Momentum
- Direction
- Force (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Distance
Torque, which is a twisting force that causes rotation, is directly proportional to both the magnitude of the applied force and the perpendicular distance from the pivot point (or axis of rotation) to the line where the force is applied. This relationship is often expressed as τ = rFsinθ, where 'r' is the distance and 'F' is the force.
Question 6: Torque is proportional to the distance between the center of rotation and the point where the force acts _______.
- Directly (Correct answer)
- Indirectly
Correct answer: Directly
Torque is directly proportional to the distance between the center of rotation (fulcrum) and the point where the force is applied. This means that if you increase this distance, also known as the lever arm, the resulting torque will increase proportionally, assuming the applied force remains constant.
Question 7: The force that opposes movement through air or liquid is commonly referred to as _______.
- Fulcrum
- Torque
- Drag (Correct answer)
- Inertia
Correct answer: Drag
The force that opposes the motion of an object through a fluid, whether it be air or liquid, is commonly known as drag. This resistive force acts in the opposite direction of the object's velocity relative to the fluid, slowing it down.
