Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Lean Enterprise Principles 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: In a lean enterprise, which concept describes the ideal state where every process step adds value and nothing is wasted?
- Perfect flow
- Zero defects
- Perfection (Correct answer)
- Takt alignment
Correct answer: Perfection
Perfection is one of the five lean principles, representing the continuous pursuit of eliminating all waste so that all activities create value.
Question 2: Which lean tool is specifically designed to make abnormal conditions immediately visible to everyone on the shop floor?
- 5S
- Andon (Correct answer)
- Poka-yoke
- Heijunka
Correct answer: Andon
Andon is a visual management system using lights or signals to alert operators and supervisors when an abnormal condition or defect occurs.
Question 3: A lean enterprise uses 'jidoka' primarily to achieve which outcome?
- Reduce batch sizes
- Stop production automatically when defects are detected (Correct answer)
- Balance workloads across workers
- Reduce changeover times
Correct answer: Stop production automatically when defects are detected
Jidoka (autonomation) empowers machines and workers to detect abnormalities and stop the line immediately, preventing defects from passing downstream.
Question 4: When applying the lean principle of 'pull,' a downstream process signals the upstream process to produce. What system is most commonly used to implement this?
- MRP
- Kanban (Correct answer)
- ERP
- Gantt chart
Correct answer: Kanban
Kanban uses cards or signals to authorize upstream processes to produce or replenish only what the downstream customer has consumed.
Question 5: In lean enterprise thinking, 'takt time' is best defined as:
- The time it takes to complete one unit from start to finish
- The rate at which customers demand products
- The available production time divided by customer demand rate (Correct answer)
- The cycle time of the bottleneck process
Correct answer: The available production time divided by customer demand rate
Takt time = available production time ÷ customer demand rate, setting the pace at which production must occur to meet demand.
Question 6: Which of the following best describes the concept of 'flow' in lean enterprise principles?
- Producing in large batches to maximize efficiency
- Moving work continuously through the value stream without interruption (Correct answer)
- Scheduling work based on forecasted demand
- Balancing machine utilization across all departments
Correct answer: Moving work continuously through the value stream without interruption
Flow means creating smooth, uninterrupted movement of products or information through the value stream, eliminating queues and delays.
Question 7: A Black Belt maps the value stream and finds that 85% of total lead time is non-value-added wait time. What is the most likely root cause in a lean context?
- Insufficient worker training
- Batch-and-queue processing (Correct answer)
- Inadequate machine capacity
- Poor quality raw materials
Correct answer: Batch-and-queue processing
Batch-and-queue processing creates large inventories between steps, causing products to wait idle for most of their lead time.
