IC3 Computing Fundamentals 2 — Questions and Answers

Question 1: What is the primary function of the BIOS in a computer system?

Manage internet connections
Initialize hardware and load the operating system (Correct answer)
Run antivirus scans
Format the hard drive

Correct answer: Initialize hardware and load the operating system

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) initializes and tests hardware during the boot process and loads the operating system from storage.

BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System and is firmware stored on a chip on the motherboard. When you turn on a computer, BIOS performs a Power-On Self-Test (POST) to verify hardware components are functioning correctly, then locates and loads the bootloader from the designated boot device, which in turn loads the operating system into RAM.

Question 2: Which type of software translates high-level programming languages into machine code?

A spreadsheet application
A compiler (Correct answer)
An operating system
A web browser

Correct answer: A compiler

A compiler translates source code written in a high-level programming language into machine code that the computer's processor can execute directly.

Compilers are a category of system software that take entire programs written in languages like C++ or Java and translate them into machine code (binary) or an intermediate form. This differs from interpreters, which translate code line by line at runtime. The compilation process includes lexical analysis, parsing, optimization, and code generation.

Question 3: What does the term 'volatile memory' refer to?

Memory that retains data when powered off
Memory that loses data when power is removed (Correct answer)
Memory that can only be written once
Memory that is used for backups

Correct answer: Memory that loses data when power is removed

Volatile memory, such as RAM, requires continuous electrical power to retain data. When the computer is turned off, all data in volatile memory is lost.

Volatile memory is a type of computer memory that requires power to maintain the stored data. RAM (Random Access Memory) is the most common form. When you open a program or file, it loads from non-volatile storage (like an SSD) into RAM for fast access. If power is interrupted unexpectedly, any data in RAM that hasn't been saved to permanent storage is lost.

Question 4: What is the main purpose of an operating system's file management system?

To connect to the internet
To organize, store, retrieve, and manage data on storage devices (Correct answer)
To run antivirus software
To control the display settings

Correct answer: To organize, store, retrieve, and manage data on storage devices

The file management system handles how data is organized into files and folders, controls read/write access, and manages storage space on drives.

An operating system's file management system (file system) provides a structured way to store and retrieve data. It creates a hierarchical directory structure of folders and files, tracks where data is physically stored on the disk, manages permissions and access control, handles naming conventions, and provides operations like copy, move, delete, and rename. Common file systems include NTFS (Windows), APFS (macOS), and ext4 (Linux).

Question 5: Which computer component is responsible for rendering images and video on a display?

CPU
RAM
GPU (Correct answer)
Power supply

Correct answer: GPU

The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is specifically designed to handle rendering images, video, and animations, offloading this work from the CPU.

The GPU, or Graphics Processing Unit, is a specialized processor designed to accelerate graphics rendering. Unlike the CPU which handles general-purpose computing with a few powerful cores, the GPU contains thousands of smaller cores optimized for parallel processing of visual data. Modern GPUs handle 2D/3D rendering, video decoding/encoding, and are also used for machine learning workloads.

Question 6: What is the purpose of a device driver?

To physically install hardware components
To allow the operating system to communicate with hardware devices (Correct answer)
To provide internet connectivity
To increase the speed of the CPU

Correct answer: To allow the operating system to communicate with hardware devices

Device drivers are software that act as translators between the operating system and hardware devices, enabling the OS to send and receive data from peripherals.

A device driver is a specialized program that allows the operating system to interact with a specific hardware device. When you connect a printer, mouse, graphics card, or any peripheral, the driver provides the necessary instructions for the OS to communicate with that device. Without the correct driver, the OS cannot send proper commands to the hardware.
