Question 1: What is the minimum distance a propane cylinder must be kept from an open flame or ignition source during torch operations according to safety codes?
- 10 feet (Correct answer)
- 2 feet
- 5 feet
- 25 feet
Correct answer: 10 feet
Safety codes require propane cylinders to be positioned at least 10 feet away from open flames and ignition sources during torch operations.
Question 2: Before starting torch work inside a building, a G60 certificate holder must inspect the work area primarily to identify:
- Combustible materials that need protection or removal (Correct answer)
- The nearest food vendor for lunch break
- The building's assessed tax value
- The age of the building's electrical wiring
Correct answer: Combustible materials that need protection or removal
A pre-work inspection must identify combustible materials in the vicinity so they can be removed or shielded before torch operations begin.
Question 3: Under FDNY regulations, a 'fire watch' must remain at the torch work site after operations cease for a minimum of:
- 30 minutes (Correct answer)
- 5 minutes
- 2 hours
- Until the next morning
Correct answer: 30 minutes
FDNY requires a fire watch to monitor the work area for at least 30 minutes after torch operations end to catch any smoldering fires.
Question 4: Which type of fire extinguisher is required to be immediately available during torch operations involving flammable gases?
- Dry chemical ABC extinguisher (Correct answer)
- Water-based extinguisher only
- CO2 extinguisher rated D class
- Sand bucket only
Correct answer: Dry chemical ABC extinguisher
A dry chemical ABC-rated extinguisher is the required type at torch work sites because it is effective against the range of fire classes likely to occur.
Question 5: A G60 certificate holder is responsible for ensuring which document is present at the job site during all torch operations?
- The hot work permit (Correct answer)
- A building lease agreement
- The employer's business license

- 6 inches
- 3 feet
- 10 feet with no barrier required
Correct answer: 20 feet or a 5-foot high firewall
Flammable and oxidizing gases must be separated by 20 feet or a 5-foot high, 30-minute fire-rated barrier per NFPA 51B and OSHA standards.
Question 7: When is it permissible to use a torch in a space classified as a confined space without special precautions?
- Never — confined spaces always require special precautions (Correct answer)
- Only when the space is larger than 100 square feet
- Only during daytime hours
- Only if the space has one open wall
Correct answer: Never — confined spaces always require special precautions
Confined spaces always require atmospheric testing, ventilation, and a permit before torch work — no size or timing exception removes this requirement.
