Tanker Familiarization Safety and Emergency Procedures 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the primary purpose of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code?
- To regulate the speed of tankers
- To ensure safe management and operation of ships (Correct answer)
- To standardize cargo handling procedures
- To control the type of fuel used by ships
Correct answer: To ensure safe management and operation of ships
The International Safety Management (ISM) Code's primary purpose is to ensure the safe management and operation of ships and to prevent marine pollution. It mandates that companies establish a Safety Management System (SMS) to promote safe practices, provide a safe working environment, and continuously improve safety performance. This code is crucial for preventing maritime accidents and protecting the environment.
Question 2: Which of the following is a crucial step during a fire emergency on board a tanker?
- Immediately evacuating the vessel
- Activating the fire alarm and notifying the crew (Correct answer)
- Using sea water to extinguish all fires
- Discharging cargo into the sea
Correct answer: Activating the fire alarm and notifying the crew
During a fire emergency on board a tanker, the crucial first step is to activate the fire alarm and notify the crew immediately. This action alerts all personnel to the danger, allowing them to initiate emergency procedures, muster, and begin fire-fighting efforts according to the ship's safety plan. Prompt notification is vital for containing the fire and ensuring crew safety.
Question 3: What type of fire extinguisher should be used to fight a fire caused by flammable liquids on a tanker?
- Water-based extinguisher
- Foam-based extinguisher (Correct answer)
- Dry powder extinguisher
- CO2 extinguisher
Correct answer: Foam-based extinguisher
For fires caused by flammable liquids (Class B fires), such as those involving petroleum products on a tanker, a foam-based extinguisher is the most effective choice. Foam works by creating a blanket over the liquid surface, cutting off the oxygen supply and cooling the fuel, thereby suppressing the fire. Water-based extinguishers are generally ineffective and can spread flammable liquid fires.
Question 4: What should be the first step when a tanker begins to take on water due to a hull breach?
- Attempt to seal the breach with duct tape
- Activate the bilge pumps to remove water (Correct answer)
- Evacuate the vessel immediately
- Discharge all cargo into the sea
Correct answer: Activate the bilge pumps to remove water
When a tanker begins to take on water due to a hull breach, the first critical step is to activate the bilge pumps to remove the ingress of water. This action helps control the flooding, maintain the vessel's stability, and reduce the risk of capsizing or further damage. It buys valuable time for the crew to assess the breach and implement damage control measures.
Question 5: Which safety device should always be worn by crew members during an emergency evacuation?
- A life jacket (Correct answer)
- A diving suit
- A gas mask
- A fireproof suit
Correct answer: A life jacket
During an emergency evacuation from a vessel, especially into water, a life jacket is the most essential safety device. It provides crucial buoyancy, keeping the wearer afloat and increasing their visibility, which is vital for survival and rescue. Wearing a life jacket significantly improves the chances of survival in a maritime emergency.
