Tanker Cargo Handling and Operations Familiarization 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Which of the following is the most important action to take before loading cargo onto a tanker?
- Conducting a ship stability check
- Ensuring all cargo tanks are clean and dry (Correct answer)
- Increasing the ship’s speed
- Testing the cargo pumps
Correct answer: Ensuring all cargo tanks are clean and dry
Before loading cargo onto a tanker, especially refined products or chemicals, it is essential to ensure all cargo tanks are clean and dry. This prevents contamination of the new cargo, maintains its quality, and avoids adverse reactions with residues from previous cargoes. Proper tank cleaning is a critical safety and quality control measure in cargo operations.
Question 2: What is the purpose of the stripping pump in cargo operations?
- To remove any remaining cargo from the tanks after unloading (Correct answer)
- To fill the ballast tanks with water
- To increase the pressure in the cargo tanks
- To circulate cargo during transit
Correct answer: To remove any remaining cargo from the tanks after unloading
The stripping pump's purpose in cargo operations is to remove any remaining cargo from the tanks after the main pumps have completed their discharge. This process, known as stripping, ensures maximum discharge efficiency, minimizes cargo residues, and prepares the tanks for cleaning or the loading of new cargo. It's crucial for optimizing cargo handling and preventing contamination.
Question 3: What is the primary role of the cargo monitoring system on a tanker?
- To ensure the cargo stays at a specific temperature
- To calculate the remaining fuel consumption
- To monitor and control the pressure and temperature of the cargo (Correct answer)
- To control the ship’s speed during cargo operations
Correct answer: To monitor and control the pressure and temperature of the cargo
The primary role of the cargo monitoring system on a tanker is to continuously monitor and control the pressure and temperature of the cargo within the tanks. This system allows the crew to detect any abnormalities, prevent overpressure or underpressure, and maintain the cargo within safe operating limits. It is crucial for the safe transport of volatile or temperature-sensitive liquid products.
Question 4: Which of the following operations is essential when loading cargo onto a tanker to avoid overfilling?
- Monitoring the cargo tank pressure
- Using the ullage system to measure the tank's capacity (Correct answer)
- Increasing the ship’s speed
- Maintaining a high draft in the water
Correct answer: Using the ullage system to measure the tank's capacity
When loading cargo onto a tanker, using the ullage system to measure the tank's capacity is an essential safety procedure to avoid overfilling. The ullage system measures the empty space above the liquid cargo, allowing for precise calculation of the loaded volume. This prevents spills, structural damage, and environmental pollution, ensuring safe and compliant cargo operations.
Question 5: What is a common safety procedure when transferring hazardous cargo between a tanker and shore facilities?
- Using only manual pumps for loading
- Ensuring that all pipelines are properly secured and leak-free (Correct answer)
- Avoiding communication with shore personnel
- Operating the tanker’s engines at full throttle
Correct answer: Ensuring that all pipelines are properly secured and leak-free
A common safety procedure when transferring hazardous cargo between a tanker and shore facilities is ensuring that all pipelines are properly secured and leak-free. This critical step prevents leaks and spills, which could lead to environmental pollution, fire hazards, or harm to personnel. Thorough checks of connections and hoses are paramount for safe and compliant cargo transfer operations.
