Free Operating Procedures & Etiquette Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the correct way to initiate contact on a repeater?
- Say 'Hello anyone there?'
- State your name
- State your call sign (Correct answer)
- Use a code word
Correct answer: State your call sign
The correct way to initiate contact on a repeater is to clearly state your call sign. This identifies you to other operators and indicates your readiness to communicate. Simply saying "Hello" or your name is insufficient for proper identification and can be considered poor operating practice in amateur radio.
Question 2: When should you identify your station during a conversation?
- At the beginning and end of the conversation
- Only when asked
- Every 10 minutes and at the end (Correct answer)
- Only at the end
Correct answer: Every 10 minutes and at the end
FCC regulations (and similar regulations in other countries) require amateur radio operators to identify their station by transmitting their call sign at least every 10 minutes during a conversation and at the end of the conversation. This ensures proper station identification for regulatory purposes and helps maintain order on the airwaves.
Question 3: Which of the following is considered poor operating etiquette?
- Using Q-codes properly
- Using plain language
- Interrupting other operators (Correct answer)
- Giving signal reports
Correct answer: Interrupting other operators
Interrupting other operators while they are engaged in a conversation is considered poor operating etiquette in ham radio. It disrupts the flow of communication and shows disrespect for others on the air. Operators should wait for a break in the conversation or for an invitation to join before transmitting.
Question 4: What is the purpose of the phonetic alphabet in ham radio?
- For secret communication
- To shorten transmissions
- To clarify spoken letters (Correct answer)
- To replace call signs
Correct answer: To clarify spoken letters
The phonetic alphabet, like Alpha-Bravo-Charlie, is used in ham radio to clarify spoken letters, especially when transmitting call signs or other critical information over noisy or weak radio channels. It helps prevent misinterpretation by providing a distinct word for each letter, improving communication accuracy.
Question 5: Which term refers to waiting a moment before transmitting on a repeater?
- Kerchunking
- Delay break (Correct answer)
- Call waiting
- Squelch tail
Correct answer: Delay break
Delay break refers to the practice of waiting a moment after a repeater's courtesy tone or after another station finishes transmitting before you begin your own transmission. This brief pause allows other stations to break in if they have emergency traffic or wish to join the conversation, and ensures the repeater has reset properly.
Question 6: What is a 'QSO' in ham radio terminology?
- A type of antenna
- A license class
- A confirmed contact (Correct answer)
- A repeater system
Correct answer: A confirmed contact
In ham radio, 'QSO' is a Q-code that stands for a confirmed contact or conversation between two amateur radio operators. It signifies a successful two-way communication, often logged by operators to keep a record of their contacts.
Question 7: What does 'QSL' mean in amateur radio?
- Please speak slower
- Antenna location
- I acknowledge receipt (Correct answer)
- Noise level report
Correct answer: I acknowledge receipt
QSL is a Q-code in amateur radio that means 'I acknowledge receipt' or 'I have received your transmission.' It is commonly used to confirm that a message or contact has been successfully received and understood, often followed by sending a physical QSL card to verify the contact.
Question 8: When using a repeater, what should you do before transmitting?
- Start talking immediately
- Press the PTT quickly
- Listen to check if the channel is free (Correct answer)
- Say 'Break Break'
Correct answer: Listen to check if the channel is free
Before transmitting on a repeater, it is crucial to listen first to ensure the channel is not already in use. This prevents you from interrupting an ongoing conversation and demonstrates good operating etiquette, allowing for polite and efficient use of shared radio resources.
Question 9: Why should you avoid using jargon or slang on air?
- It's illegal
- It causes interference
- It may confuse others (Correct answer)
- It slows down communication
Correct answer: It may confuse others
You should avoid using jargon or slang on air because it may confuse other operators, especially those who are new to the hobby or from different regions. Clear and concise language ensures that your message is understood by the widest possible audience, promoting effective communication.
