Question 1: A patron approaches the reference desk and states, "I need to find books about the environment." The librarian responds, "That's a great topic. To help me find the best resources, can you tell me a bit more about what aspect of the environment you're interested in?" What key technique of the reference interview is the librarian using?
- Paraphrasing the user's query for confirmation.
- Using a closed-ended question to get a 'yes' or 'no' answer.
- Providing an immediate answer with a known reference source.
- Using an open-ended question to clarify and narrow the information need. (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Using an open-ended question to clarify and narrow the information need.
The patron's initial question is very broad. The librarian's response is an open-ended question designed to encourage the patron to provide more detail, which is a crucial step in clarifying and defining the actual information need. This helps move the interview from a general topic to a specific, answerable question.
Question 2: According to Carol Kuhlthau's Information Search Process (ISP) model, which stage is characterized by feelings of uncertainty and anxiety, where the user is first becoming aware of a lack of knowledge or understanding?
- Formulation
- Initiation (Correct answer)
- Exploration
- Collection
Correct answer: Initiation
The 'Initiation' stage is the first phase of the ISP model. It is marked by the user recognizing the need for information and the accompanying feelings of uncertainty and apprehension about the task ahead.
Question 3: In a readers' advisory interview, a patron mentions they loved a particular novel because of its witty dialogue, lyrical prose, and the overall atmospheric tone the author created. The librarian is primarily identifying which of the following appeal factors?
- Pacing
- Character
- Storyline
- Language (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Language
The 'Language' appeal factor relates to the way the book is written—the prose, style, tone, and dialogue. The patron's description focuses on these elements rather than the speed of the plot (Pacing), the people in the story (Character), or the events that take place (Storyline).
Question 4: A university librarian is conducting an instructional session where students must evaluate a scholarly journal article, a popular magazine article, and a personal blog post on the same topic. The goal is for students to understand that the credibility and usefulness of a source depend on its creation process and the context in which it will be used. This lesson plan is most directly addressing which frame from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy?
- Information Has Value
- Research as Inquiry
- Authority Is Constructed and Contextual (Correct answer)
- Searching as Strategic Exploration
Correct answer: Authority Is Constructed and Contextual
The 'Authority Is Constructed and Contextual' frame asserts that the authority of a source is determined by the specific context and information need. The activity described requires students to analyze how authority is established differently in scholarly, popular, and informal contexts, which is the central concept of this frame.
Question 5: A library director hires students to pose as patrons and ask a pre-determined set of factual questions at the reference desk over several weeks. The students then report back on the accuracy of the answers and the quality of the service they received. This method of evaluating reference service is known as:
- A patron satisfaction survey
- A focus group interview
- Unobtrusive evaluation (Correct answer)
- Peer performance review
Correct answer: Unobtrusive evaluation
This is a classic example of unobtrusive evaluation (or unobtrusive observation). The key element is that the staff being evaluated are unaware they are part of a study, which prevents their behavior from being influenced by the observation itself (the Hawthorne effect).
Question 6: Which of the following user queries is the best example of a ready reference question?
- "What is the current population of Brazil?" (Correct answer)
- "Can you help me find scholarly articles on the effects of climate change on agriculture?"
- "I'm looking for a good mystery novel, what do you recommend?"
- "How do I use the library's new 3D printer?"
Correct answer: "What is the current population of Brazil?"
A ready reference question is one that asks for a single, brief, factual piece of information that can be answered quickly using a standard reference source (e.g., an encyclopedia, almanac, or specific database). The population of Brazil is a discrete fact, whereas the other options require in-depth research, advisory services, or procedural instruction.
