Question 1: A library wants to enable its patrons to check out books using a new self-check kiosk. For the kiosk to communicate with the library's Integrated Library System (ILS) to authenticate patrons and process circulation transactions, which standard protocol is specifically designed for this purpose?
- OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting)
- Z39.50
- SIP2 (Standard Interchange Protocol, Version 2) (Correct answer)
- METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard)
Correct answer: SIP2 (Standard Interchange Protocol, Version 2)
SIP2 is a protocol that has become the de facto industry standard for communication between an ILS and self-service circulation devices or other third-party automation systems. [16, 19] It handles patron authentication, item status checks, and check-in/checkout commands. [13, 22] OAI-PMH is for harvesting metadata, Z39.50 is for information retrieval from databases, and METS is a metadata standard for digital objects.
Question 2: Which of the following best describes the primary function of a discovery layer in a library's technology ecosystem?
- To manage the acquisition, licensing, and usage tracking of electronic resources.
- To provide a single search interface that indexes and retrieves results from the ILS, databases, and digital repositories. (Correct answer)
- To create and edit bibliographic records using standards like MARC 21 and RDA.
- To manage the circulation of physical items, track fines, and maintain patron records.
Correct answer: To provide a single search interface that indexes and retrieves results from the ILS, databases, and digital repositories.
A discovery layer provides a unified, "Google-like" search experience by aggregating metadata from disparate sources (like the ILS catalog, subscription databases, and local digital collections) into a central index. [17, 28] This allows users to search across a vast range of the library's holdings through one search box. [28] The other options describe core functions of an Integrated Library System (ILS) or an Electronic Resource Management (ERM) system. [15]
Question 3: An academic library is building an institutional repository to ensure the long-term viability and accessibility of faculty research. Which metadata standard is specifically designed to support the preservation of digital objects by documenting preservation activities and object characteristics?
- PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies) (Correct answer)
- MARC 21
- Dublin Core
- MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema)
Correct answer: PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies)
PREMIS is the international de facto standard for metadata to support the preservation of digital objects. [1, 2] It defines a data dictionary of core preservation metadata elements needed to support the long-term usability, authenticity, and renderability of digital materials. [1, 4] Dublin Core is for simple resource description, MARC is for bibliographic cataloging, and MODS is for rich descriptive metadata, but none are focused specifically on the detailed requirements of digital preservation. [1, 2]
Question 4: A university wants to implement a system where students can log in once with their campus credentials to access all library databases, the course management system, and other third-party services, both on and off campus. Which technology is best suited to achieve this single sign-on (SSO) goal?
- A proxy server
- A network firewall
- Federated Identity Management (e.g., Shibboleth) (Correct answer)
- A Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Correct answer: Federated Identity Management (e.g., Shibboleth)
Federated Identity Management systems, such as those using Shibboleth or SAML, are designed for Single Sign-On (SSO). [26, 27] The user authenticates with their home institution (the Identity Provider), which then securely asserts their identity to external vendors (Service Providers), granting access without the user needing separate accounts for each service. [25, 30] A proxy server provides remote access but doesn't inherently provide SSO across different vendor platforms, and a VPN provides network-level access, not application-level authentication federation. [27]
Question 5: The library technology market has seen a shift from traditional Integrated Library Systems (ILS) to Library Services Platforms (LSP). What is a key architectural difference that distinguishes an LSP from a traditional ILS?
- ILSs manage both print and electronic resources, while LSPs can only manage print resources.
- LSPs are exclusively for academic libraries, while ILSs are for public libraries.
- LSPs use a closed-source code base, while all traditional ILSs are open-source.
- LSPs are typically built on a unified, cloud-based, multi-tenant platform, whereas traditional ILSs often consist of separate modules installed on local servers. (Correct answer)
Correct answer: LSPs are typically built on a unified, cloud-based, multi-tenant platform, whereas traditional ILSs often consist of separate modules installed on local servers.
The primary architectural shift from ILS to LSP is the move to a unified, cloud-native platform. LSPs are generally designed from the ground up to be multi-tenant (serving multiple libraries from a single instance of the software) and delivered as a service (SaaS). [6, 20] This contrasts with many traditional ILSs that were designed as single-tenant systems with distinct functional modules (e.g., cataloging, circulation) often installed and maintained on a library's local servers. [6, 9]
Question 6: A library is analyzing its e-resource usage statistics to make renewal decisions. The usage reports provided by different publishers are in various formats, making direct comparison difficult. Which international standard is designed to ensure consistency and credibility in the recording and reporting of online resource usage statistics?
- SUSHI (Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative)
- COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources) (Correct answer)
- KBART (Knowledge Bases and Related Tools)
- OpenURL
Correct answer: COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources)
The COUNTER Code of Practice is the industry standard that enables libraries and publishers to report and compare usage of their electronic resources in a consistent and credible way. [8, 14] It provides clear definitions for metrics like successful full-text article requests and searches. [10, 11] SUSHI is the protocol used to automate the collection of COUNTER-compliant reports, KBART is for knowledge base metadata, and OpenURL is for link resolving.
