Forklift MCQ 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Why are there counterweights on forklifts?
- To ensure the vehicle does not overheat
- To ensure the vehicle does not cause damage to surrounding structures
- To ensure the fuel levels in the tank remain stable
- To ensure the vehicle remains stable whilst lifting loads (Correct answer)
Correct answer: To ensure the vehicle remains stable whilst lifting loads
Counterweights are heavy masses strategically placed at the rear of a forklift, opposite the forks. Their primary purpose is to counterbalance the weight of the load being lifted at the front of the machine. This design ensures the forklift remains stable and prevents it from tipping forward, especially when handling heavy loads at height, thereby maintaining operational safety.
Question 2: Why is it crucial to check that the carriage's forks are spaced evenly before beginning to lift a load?
- To keep the centre of gravity high
- To provide maximum load support (Correct answer)
- To lift the load higher
- To keep the machine stable (Correct answer)
Correct answer: To provide maximum load support
Checking that the carriage's forks are spaced evenly before lifting a load is crucial for two main reasons. Firstly, it provides maximum load support by distributing the weight across the widest possible base, preventing the load from tilting or falling. Secondly, proper fork spacing helps maintain the machine's stability by ensuring the load's center of gravity is optimally aligned, reducing the risk of the forklift tipping over.
Question 3: In order to move the forklift between locations, you will be operating it onto a transporter. This loading operation is quite important. Who is in charge of it?
- You, the forklift operator
- The driver of the transporter (Correct answer)
- The banksman
- The vehicle marshal
Correct answer: The driver of the transporter
When loading a forklift onto a transporter for relocation, the driver of the transporter is typically in charge of the overall loading operation. This is because they are responsible for the safe transport of the vehicle and must ensure it is correctly positioned, secured, and within the transporter's weight and dimension limits. While the forklift operator performs the driving, the transporter driver oversees the entire process to ensure compliance and safety.
Question 4: Which THREE of the following best sums up the risks associated with working in small spaces?
- Visibility can be poor (Correct answer)
- People are working in close proximity (Correct answer)
- Fumes can build up (Correct answer)
- Work will be slower
Correct answer: Visibility can be poor
Working in small spaces presents several significant risks. Firstly, visibility can be poor due to obstructions or limited lighting, increasing the chance of collisions. Secondly, people are often working in close proximity, raising the risk of contact injuries or being struck by moving equipment. Thirdly, fumes from exhaust or other sources can build up quickly in confined areas, leading to respiratory issues or oxygen depletion for workers.
Question 5: Why is it necessary to examine a lifting machine in addition to checking it every day?
- The examination is used to test the knowledge of new operators
- The examination is only necessary where daily checks have shown faults
- The examination creates a written record to be used in case of prosecution
- The examination will catch defects not covered during daily checks (Correct answer)
Correct answer: The examination will catch defects not covered during daily checks
While daily checks are essential for identifying obvious faults, a thorough periodic examination of a lifting machine is necessary to uncover deeper, less apparent defects. These comprehensive inspections go beyond routine checks, assessing critical components and structural integrity that might not be visible or easily checked daily. This ensures long-term safety and compliance, preventing potential failures that daily checks might miss.
Question 6: What disadvantage does a triplex mast have over a duplex mast?
- It is less safe
- It decreases lift height
- It reduces visibility (Correct answer)
- It has a reduced load capacity
Correct answer: It reduces visibility
A triplex mast, while offering greater lift height, typically has more hydraulic cylinders and chain assemblies than a duplex mast. These additional components are positioned within the operator's line of sight, which can significantly reduce forward visibility. This decreased visibility can make maneuvering and load placement more challenging and increase the risk of accidents.
Question 7: If the forklift's counterweight approaches any structure closer than a predetermined distance, extra safety precautions need to be taken. How far away is that?
- 750 mm
- 1000 mm
- 300 mm
- 600 mm (Correct answer)
Correct answer: 600 mm
If a forklift's counterweight approaches any structure closer than 600 mm (approximately 2 feet), extra safety precautions are required. This predetermined distance is a safety standard to prevent crushing hazards for personnel or damage to structures. Operating within this zone necessitates heightened awareness, clear communication, and often the implementation of exclusion zones or spotters to ensure safety.
