Question 1: You are patrolling a neighborhood when you notice a group of teenagers loitering near a closed store. One of them appears to be attempting to break into the store.

What is the best course of action?
- Approach the group and ask them what they are doing.
- Call for backup and observe from a distance.
- Confront the teenager attempting to break in and detain him. (Correct answer)
- Ignore the situation since it might be harmless.
Correct answer: Confront the teenager attempting to break in and detain him.
Witnessing an individual attempting to break into a store constitutes an active crime in progress. The best course of action is to immediately confront and detain the teenager to prevent the crime from being completed and to secure the suspect. Waiting or observing from a distance could allow the crime to be committed or the suspect to flee.
Question 2: During a routine traffic stop, the driver becomes increasingly agitated and refuses to provide identification. The driver begins to yell and attract the attention of passersby.

What should you do to handle the situation?
- Draw your weapon and demand compliance
- Call for backup and try to calm the driver down (Correct answer)
- Immediately arrest the driver for non-compliance.
- Let the driver go to avoid escalating the situation further.
Correct answer: Call for backup and try to calm the driver down
When a driver becomes agitated and non-compliant during a traffic stop, the priority is to de-escalate the situation and ensure safety. Calling for backup provides additional support and a safer environment, while attempting to calm the driver down can prevent further escalation. Drawing a weapon or immediate arrest without attempting de-escalation could worsen the situation unnecessarily.
Question 3: You arrive at a domestic disturbance call where a couple is arguing loudly. One of the individuals is visibly upset and claims that the other has been physically abusive.
What is the best initial response?
- Separate the individuals and interview them separately. (Correct answer)
- Arrest both individuals to prevent further violence.
- Tell them to resolve their issues calmly and leave the scene.
- Ignore the complaint since it is likely a private matter.
Correct answer: Separate the individuals and interview them separately.
In a domestic disturbance where physical abuse is alleged, the best initial response is to separate the individuals and interview them separately. This allows each person to provide their account without influence or intimidation from the other, helping the officer gather accurate information and assess the situation impartially. It also helps ensure the safety of all parties.
Question 4: While on patrol, you witness a minor car accident where one driver is blaming the other aggressively. The other driver looks intimidated and is not responding.

What is the best approach?
- Ignore the situation since no one appears to be injured.
- Approach the scene and separate the drivers to understand both sides. (Correct answer)
- Arrest the aggressive driver for causing a disturbance.
- Take a report from aggressive driver only since they are more vocal.
Correct answer: Approach the scene and separate the drivers to understand both sides.
In a minor car accident with an aggressive driver, the best approach is to approach the scene and separate the drivers. This allows the officer to de-escalate the confrontation, gather information from both parties impartially, and understand the full circumstances of the accident. Ignoring the situation or only listening to one side would be irresponsible.
Question 5: You are dispatched to a call about a suspicious person loitering near a playground. When you arrive, you see an adult who appears nervous and is watching the children closely.

What is the best course of action?
- Immediately confront and detain the person
- Observe the person's behavior discretely before making contact. (Correct answer)
- Ignore the person as they may have a legitimate reason to b there.
- Ask the children if they know the person.
Correct answer: Observe the person's behavior discretely before making contact.
When responding to a call about a suspicious person, it's best to observe their behavior discreetly before making direct contact. This allows the officer to gather more information, confirm if the behavior is indeed suspicious or if there's a legitimate reason for their presence, and formulate a safe approach. Immediate confrontation without observation could be premature or escalate a non-threatening situation.
