Forklift certification Certification Forklift 3 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is a safe practice when a pedestrian is in the path of your forklift?
- Speed up to pass quickly
- Sound the horn, slow down, and stop if needed (Correct answer)
- Continue at the same speed
- Raise the forks as a warning
Correct answer: Sound the horn, slow down, and stop if needed
Operators must sound the horn at intersections and blind spots, slow down, and yield to pedestrians who always have the right of way.
Question 2: Adding a heavier attachment to a forklift generally does what to its rated capacity?
- Increases the capacity
- Reduces the rated capacity (Correct answer)
- Has no effect on capacity
- Doubles the capacity
Correct answer: Reduces the rated capacity
Attachments add weight and can move the load center, which lowers the truck's effective load capacity.
Question 3: What is the maximum grade you should typically avoid parking a forklift on?
- Any grade; park on level ground when possible (Correct answer)
- Only grades steeper than 30 degrees
- Any grade under 10 degrees is fine
- Grades do not matter when parked
Correct answer: Any grade; park on level ground when possible
Forklifts should be parked on level ground; if parking on an incline is unavoidable, chock the wheels.
Question 4: Before leaving a forklift unattended, the operator should do all of the following EXCEPT:
- Fully lower the forks
- Set the parking brake
- Leave the engine running for a quick return (Correct answer)
- Neutralize the controls and shut off power
Correct answer: Leave the engine running for a quick return
An unattended truck must have forks down, controls neutralized, brake set, and power off.
Question 5: What is the correct way to pick up a palletized load?
- Insert forks only halfway under the pallet
- Insert forks fully under the load and center it on both forks (Correct answer)
- Lift with only one fork for balance
- Tilt forward before inserting the forks
Correct answer: Insert forks fully under the load and center it on both forks
Forks should be spread appropriately and inserted fully under the load, centered so weight is evenly distributed.
Question 6: Why should you avoid raising or lowering a load while the forklift is moving?
- It wastes fuel
- It reduces stability and can cause tip-overs (Correct answer)
- It damages the pallet
- It is allowed at low speeds
Correct answer: It reduces stability and can cause tip-overs
Raising a load while moving raises the center of gravity and reduces stability, increasing tip-over risk.
Question 7: What personal protective equipment is commonly required when operating a forklift?
- Only a hard hat
- Hi-visibility vest, safety shoes, and hard hat as required by the site (Correct answer)
- No PPE is needed inside a cab
- Only gloves
Correct answer: Hi-visibility vest, safety shoes, and hard hat as required by the site
Sites typically require hi-vis clothing, safety footwear, and head protection depending on the environment.
