DADE DADE Weather & Meteorology 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the standard altimeter setting when operating above 18,000 feet MSL in the United States?
- 29.92 inHg (Correct answer)
- 30.00 inHg
- Local altimeter setting
- 29.50 inHg
Correct answer: 29.92 inHg
Above 18,000 feet MSL in Class A airspace, all aircraft use the standard altimeter setting of 29.92 inHg.
Question 2: A SIGMET is issued for which type of weather phenomenon?
- Light turbulence below 10,000 feet
- Severe or extreme turbulence, icing, or volcanic ash (Correct answer)
- Thunderstorms along Victor airways
- Surface winds exceeding 20 knots
Correct answer: Severe or extreme turbulence, icing, or volcanic ash
SIGMETs are issued for severe or extreme turbulence, severe icing, and volcanic ash that are hazardous to all aircraft.
Question 3: What wind shear condition is most critical during aircraft approach and landing?
- Tailwind shear increasing airspeed
- Low-level wind shear causing sudden airspeed loss (Correct answer)
- Crosswind shear above 5,000 feet AGL
- Upper-level jet stream shear
Correct answer: Low-level wind shear causing sudden airspeed loss
Low-level wind shear that causes a sudden loss of airspeed during approach is the most critical condition because it can lead to loss of lift during final approach.
Question 4: What does a TAF amendment (AMD) indicate?
- A routine 6-hour forecast update
- A significant change from the original forecast requiring immediate correction (Correct answer)
- A cancellation of the previous TAF
- An extension of the forecast period
Correct answer: A significant change from the original forecast requiring immediate correction
A TAF amendment (AMD) is issued when actual conditions differ significantly from the original forecast and an immediate correction is necessary.
Question 5: Which cloud type is associated with severe in-flight icing and turbulence for dispatch planning?
- Cirrus
- Stratus
- Cumulonimbus (Correct answer)
- Alto cumulus
Correct answer: Cumulonimbus
Cumulonimbus clouds are associated with the most severe weather hazards including extreme turbulence, lightning, hail, and heavy icing.
Question 6: What is the primary purpose of an AIRMET Sierra (AIRMET S)?
- To warn of instrument meteorological conditions and mountain obscuration (Correct answer)
- To report severe turbulence above FL180
- To notify of volcanic activity
- To alert of freezing rain above 10,000 feet
Correct answer: To warn of instrument meteorological conditions and mountain obscuration
AIRMET Sierra warns of IFR conditions (ceiling below 1,000 feet and/or visibility below 3 miles) and mountain obscuration.
