CQIA Supplier Management & Partnerships 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the purpose of a 'preferred supplier' program in quality management?
- To give exclusive contracts to the lowest-cost provider
- To identify and reward suppliers who consistently meet or exceed quality and performance standards (Correct answer)
- To reduce the total number of suppliers to exactly one per category
- To prioritize domestic suppliers over international ones
Correct answer: To identify and reward suppliers who consistently meet or exceed quality and performance standards
A preferred supplier program recognizes suppliers that consistently meet quality, delivery, and service standards, incentivizing performance and streamlining procurement.
Question 2: What is the main purpose of incoming inspection in supplier quality management?
- To rework defective parts before they reach production
- To verify that received materials meet specifications before they enter production (Correct answer)
- To audit the supplier's manufacturing facility
- To negotiate returns with the supplier after production defects are found
Correct answer: To verify that received materials meet specifications before they enter production
Incoming inspection verifies that purchased materials conform to required specifications before being accepted into inventory or production, preventing downstream defects.
Question 3: What does a 'single-source' supplier strategy mean?
- Using multiple suppliers for each part to ensure competition
- Sourcing a specific product or component from only one supplier (Correct answer)
- Buying all materials from the same geographic region
- Requiring all suppliers to use a single ERP platform
Correct answer: Sourcing a specific product or component from only one supplier
Single-source means intentionally choosing one supplier for a specific item, often to build a deep partnership and streamline quality and logistics.
Question 4: How does Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) benefit quality improvement?
- It allows the buyer to delay finalizing specifications until after production starts
- It brings supplier expertise into the design phase to prevent quality issues before they occur (Correct answer)
- It transfers all quality responsibility to the supplier
- It reduces the need for supplier audits during production
Correct answer: It brings supplier expertise into the design phase to prevent quality issues before they occur
ESI integrates suppliers during design and development, leveraging their manufacturing knowledge to identify and eliminate potential quality issues before production begins.
Question 5: What is a Supplier Corrective Action Request (SCAR)?
- A financial penalty assessed when a supplier delivers late
- A formal document requesting a supplier to investigate and correct a quality nonconformance (Correct answer)
- A monthly quality scorecard report sent to the supplier
- A request to increase supplier production capacity
Correct answer: A formal document requesting a supplier to investigate and correct a quality nonconformance
A SCAR formally notifies a supplier of a quality nonconformance and requires them to investigate root causes, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurrence.

- The cost of auditing and certifying a supplier
- The transportation cost from the supplier's facility to the buyer's warehouse
Correct answer: All costs associated with acquiring, using, and maintaining a supplier's products over time
TCO encompasses all costs beyond the purchase price, including inspection, rework, warranty, transportation, and relationship management costs, providing a complete picture of supplier value.
Question 7: How does reducing the number of suppliers in a supply base generally affect quality?
- It increases quality risk by creating single points of failure
- It typically improves quality by enabling deeper partnerships and better oversight per supplier (Correct answer)
- It has no effect on quality because quality depends only on specifications
- It always reduces quality due to reduced competition between suppliers
Correct answer: It typically improves quality by enabling deeper partnerships and better oversight per supplier
A rationalized, smaller supplier base allows organizations to invest more deeply in each supplier relationship, improving communication, oversight, and quality outcomes.
