CCSP Exercise Physiology & Sports Performance Testing 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: The phosphocreatine (ATP-PC) energy system is the primary fuel source for activities lasting approximately how long?
- 0–10 seconds (Correct answer)
- 30–60 seconds
- 1–3 minutes
- Over 3 minutes
Correct answer: 0–10 seconds
The ATP-PC system provides immediate, high-intensity energy but is depleted within approximately 10 seconds of maximal effort.
Question 2: VO2 max is defined as which of the following?
- The resting oxygen consumption of skeletal muscle at basal metabolic rate
- The ratio of oxygen delivered to oxygen consumed at rest
- The maximum rate of oxygen consumption during maximal incremental exercise (Correct answer)
- The partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood during exercise
Correct answer: The maximum rate of oxygen consumption during maximal incremental exercise
VO2 max is the highest rate at which the body can consume oxygen during maximal aerobic exercise, reflecting overall cardiorespiratory fitness.
Question 3: The glycolytic (anaerobic) energy system is the primary energy source for activities lasting approximately:
- 0–10 seconds
- 10 seconds to 2 minutes (Correct answer)
- 2–5 minutes
- Greater than 10 minutes
Correct answer: 10 seconds to 2 minutes
The glycolytic system predominates during activities lasting approximately 10 seconds to 2 minutes, bridging the phosphagen and oxidative systems.
Question 4: During intense exercise approaching VO2 max, which fuel substrate provides the greatest contribution to muscle energy?
- Free fatty acids from adipose tissue
- Ketone bodies from hepatic metabolism
- Blood glucose from hepatic glycogenolysis
- Muscle glycogen via anaerobic glycolysis (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Muscle glycogen via anaerobic glycolysis
At exercise intensities near VO2 max, muscle glycogen is the predominant fuel because it can be rapidly broken down anaerobically via glycolysis.
Question 5: The Fick equation expresses VO2 as:
- Cardiac output multiplied by the arteriovenous oxygen difference (Correct answer)
- Heart rate multiplied by stroke volume
- Pulmonary ventilation divided by oxygen saturation
- Hemoglobin concentration multiplied by SpO2
Correct answer: Cardiac output multiplied by the arteriovenous oxygen difference
The Fick equation states VO2 = Cardiac Output × a-vO2 difference, linking oxygen delivery via cardiac output to oxygen extraction by peripheral tissues.
Question 6: Compared to Type I (slow-twitch) muscle fibers, Type II (fast-twitch) fibers are best characterized by:
- Higher oxidative capacity and greater fatigue resistance
- Greater peak force production but faster fatigability (Correct answer)
- More mitochondria and higher capillary density
- Preferential use of fat as fuel during high-intensity exercise
Correct answer: Greater peak force production but faster fatigability
Type II fibers produce greater force and speed but fatigue faster due to reliance on anaerobic glycolysis and lower mitochondrial density compared to Type I fibers.
Question 7: The lactate threshold is best defined as the exercise intensity at which:
- Skeletal muscle glycogen stores are fully depleted
- Arterial oxygen saturation drops below 95%
- Blood lactate begins to accumulate faster than it can be cleared (Correct answer)
- Heart rate exceeds 85% of age-predicted maximum
Correct answer: Blood lactate begins to accumulate faster than it can be cleared
The lactate threshold marks the inflection point where lactate production by muscle exceeds the clearance capacity of the body, signaling a shift toward predominantly anaerobic metabolism.
