Safety Procedures Flashcards

An inspector must open an electrical panel's dead-front cover during an inspection. Which practice is safest?

Answer: Stand to the side, wear safety glasses and insulated gloves, and keep feet on a dry surface

Standing to the side on a dry surface with eye and hand protection limits exposure to arc flash and shock.

What is the minimum clearance OSHA generally requires between equipment or workers and energized overhead power lines rated 50 kV or less?

Answer: 10 feet

OSHA requires a minimum approach distance of 10 feet for unqualified persons near lines up to 50 kV.

Which type of fire extinguisher is rated for energized electrical equipment fires?

Answer: Class C

Class C ratings indicate the extinguishing agent is nonconductive and suitable for energized electrical equipment.

Which ANSI standard applies to protective eyewear an inspector should wear on an active job site?

Answer: ANSI Z87.1

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is the standard for occupational eye and face protection.

What is OSHA's 8-hour time-weighted average action level for noise that triggers a hearing conservation program?

Answer: 85 dBA

OSHA 1910.95 sets the action level at 85 dBA as an 8-hour TWA, with the permissible exposure limit at 90 dBA.

While walking an unfinished attic, where should an inspector place their feet?

Answer: On the ceiling joists or truss bottom chords

Only framing members are designed to carry a person's weight, while the ceiling finish between them can give way.

An inspector smells rotten eggs near a sewer cleanout in a basement, but after a few minutes the odor seems to fade. What is the most likely explanation and correct response?

Answer: Olfactory fatigue from hydrogen sulfide may be masking the hazard, so leave and ventilate

Hydrogen sulfide quickly deadens the sense of smell, so a fading odor does not mean the concentration has dropped.
