  1. Before removing an electrical panel deadfront, the inspector should FIRST:

Answer: Check for heat, scorching, buzzing or a wet floor, and wear suitable PPE

If there are signs of heat, arcing or standing water, the cover should stay on; when it is safe, wear PPE and stand to the side.

  2. A standard Class A GFCI is designed to trip when ground-fault current reaches about:

    Answer: 4–6 mA

UL 943 Class A GFCIs must trip at 6 mA or more and must not trip below 4 mA.

  3. If the inspector finds a system shut down when they arrive (for example, the furnace breaker is off), standard SOP says they should:

Answer: Not operate it, and report that it was shut down

SOPs do not require inspectors to operate any system that is shut down, because restarting it may be unsafe.

  4. On a correctly wired 120V receptacle, a multimeter reading from neutral to ground should be:

    Answer: Near 0 volts

Neutral and ground are bonded at the service, so the voltage between them should be close to zero.

  5. For a readily accessible and operable fireplace damper, the inspector should:

    Answer: Open and close it

Inspection SOPs call for opening and closing the damper door when it is readily accessible and operable.

  6. For windows in the interior inspection, the SOP requires the inspector to:

Answer: Open and close a representative number of windows

Inspectors operate a representative sample of windows rather than every unit.

  7. When checking a freestanding range, what safety item should the inspector check for?

Answer: An anti-tip bracket or device

An anti-tip device stops the range from tipping forward when weight is put on an open oven door.
