Boating Certification Test Fueling Safety and Fire Prevention 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What should you do before starting an inboard engine after fueling?
- Check the oil level
- Run the bilge blower for at least 4 minutes to clear gasoline vapors (Correct answer)
- Turn on the navigation lights
- Test the emergency horn
Correct answer: Run the bilge blower for at least 4 minutes to clear gasoline vapors
Running the bilge blower for at least 4 minutes removes potentially explosive gasoline vapors from the engine compartment before any ignition source is introduced.
Question 2: How long should the bilge blower run before starting an inboard engine after fueling?
- At least 1 minute
- At least 2 minutes
- At least 4 minutes (Correct answer)
- At least 10 minutes
Correct answer: At least 4 minutes
The U.S. Coast Guard recommends running the bilge blower for a minimum of 4 minutes to thoroughly flush gasoline vapors from enclosed engine spaces.
Question 3: Where should portable fuel tanks be filled?
- In the boat's cockpit
- Inside the engine compartment
- On the dock or shore, away from the boat (Correct answer)
- Inside the cabin
Correct answer: On the dock or shore, away from the boat
Portable fuel tanks should be removed from the boat and filled on the dock or ashore to keep fuel vapors and potential spills away from the vessel.
Question 4: What should passengers do while a boat is being fueled?
- Stay on board to help stabilize the vessel
- Go ashore or move well away from the fueling area (Correct answer)
- Hold the fuel nozzle to assist the operator
- Monitor the fuel level gauge below deck
Correct answer: Go ashore or move well away from the fueling area
All passengers should leave the boat and move away from the fueling area so that fewer people are at risk if a fire or explosion occurs during fueling.
Question 5: Which fire extinguisher class is rated for flammable liquid fires such as gasoline?
- Class A
- Class C
- Class D
- Class B (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Class B
Class B extinguishers are designed for flammable liquid fires — including gasoline, oil, and grease — which represent the most common fire hazard on recreational boats.
Question 6: What should you do if you detect gasoline fumes in the bilge before starting the engine?
- Start the engine quickly to burn off the vapors
- Pour water into the bilge to dilute the fumes
- Immediately activate the bilge pump
- Open hatches and run the blower until the fumes are gone (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Open hatches and run the blower until the fumes are gone
Gasoline vapor must be fully ventilated by opening hatches and running the bilge blower until the smell disappears before any spark-producing action such as starting the engine.
Question 7: Why should you keep the fuel nozzle in contact with the fill pipe during boat fueling?
- To prevent fuel from spilling overboard
- To maintain a steady fuel flow rate
- To prevent static electricity sparks that could ignite vapors (Correct answer)
- To make the fueling process faster
Correct answer: To prevent static electricity sparks that could ignite vapors
Maintaining metal-to-metal contact between the nozzle and fill pipe grounds the connection and prevents static electricity buildup that could generate a spark near fuel vapors.
