Bartender Certification Cocktail Recipes and Techniques 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What are the three classic components of a Negroni?
- Vodka, triple sec, and lime juice
- Gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari (Correct answer)
- Rum, lime juice, and sugar
- Tequila, orange juice, and grenadine
Correct answer: Gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari
A classic Negroni is made with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari, stirred over ice and garnished with an orange peel.
The Negroni is one of the most celebrated classic cocktails, invented (according to legend) in Florence, Italy around 1919. It is made with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari — typically 1 oz of each — stirred over ice in a rocks glass and garnished with an orange twist or orange slice. The Campari provides the characteristic bitter, herbaceous flavor and the vivid red color. The Negroni inspired many variations, including the Sbagliato (Prosecco instead of gin), the Boulevardier (bourbon instead of gin), and the White Negroni.
Question 2: What is the correct preparation method for a Mojito?
- Shake all ingredients and strain into a martini glass
- Blend with ice until smooth
- Muddle mint and lime, add rum and sugar, top with soda water over ice (Correct answer)
- Layer in a shot glass
Correct answer: Muddle mint and lime, add rum and sugar, top with soda water over ice
A Mojito is made by muddling fresh mint leaves and lime wedges with sugar, adding white rum, then topping with soda water and serving over ice.
The classic Mojito recipe: Muddle 8–10 fresh mint leaves and 2 lime wedges with 0.75 oz simple syrup or 2 teaspoons sugar in a highball glass (gentle press — do not shred the mint). Add 2 oz white rum, fill the glass with ice, top with 2–3 oz soda water, and stir gently to combine. Garnish with a mint sprig and lime wheel. The Mojito originated in Cuba and is one of the most popular cocktails worldwide. Over-muddling the mint releases bitter compounds, so a light touch is essential.
Question 3: Which spirit is the base of a Moscow Mule?
- Bourbon
- Gin
- Tequila
- Vodka (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Vodka
A Moscow Mule is made with vodka, ginger beer, and fresh lime juice, traditionally served in a copper mug.
The Moscow Mule was created in the 1940s as a way to market American vodka (specifically Smirnoff) alongside ginger beer. The recipe is simple: 2 oz vodka, 4–6 oz ginger beer, and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, built in a copper mug over ice and garnished with a lime wedge and mint sprig. The copper mug keeps the drink cold and is strongly associated with the cocktail's identity. Variations include the Kentucky Mule (bourbon), the Mexican Mule (tequila), and the Dark 'n' Stormy (dark rum).
Question 4: What is the difference between a 'Tom Collins' and a 'John Collins'?
- They are identical cocktails with different names
- A Tom Collins uses gin; a John Collins uses bourbon or whiskey (Correct answer)
- A Tom Collins uses rum; a John Collins uses vodka
- Tom Collins is served frozen; John Collins is served on the rocks
Correct answer: A Tom Collins uses gin; a John Collins uses bourbon or whiskey
A Tom Collins uses gin as its base spirit, while a John Collins traditionally uses bourbon or whiskey, though some recipes use any base spirit.
Both the Tom Collins and John Collins are variations of the Collins cocktail family: a base spirit, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and soda water over ice in a tall Collins glass. The Tom Collins uses gin and is the original, most well-known version. The John Collins traditionally uses bourbon whiskey (particularly associated with Old Tom gin historically, though modern usage generally means whiskey). The cocktail family expands to include the Vodka Collins, Rum Collins (Ron Collins), and others simply by swapping the base spirit.
Question 5: What garnish is traditional for a classic Gin and Tonic?
- Maraschino cherry
- Orange wheel
- Lime wedge or cucumber slice (Correct answer)
- Celery stalk
Correct answer: Lime wedge or cucumber slice
A classic Gin and Tonic is traditionally garnished with a lime wedge or, increasingly in modern craft versions, a cucumber slice, which complements the botanical character of gin.
A traditional Gin and Tonic (G&T) is garnished with a lime wedge squeezed and dropped into the glass. In the UK, a lemon slice is equally traditional. The craft cocktail movement has expanded G&T garnishes significantly — cucumber slices, fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, basil), juniper berries, grapefruit wedges, and elderflower are now common. Spanish-style Gin and Tonics served in large Copa de Balon glasses often feature elaborate botanical garnishes that complement the specific botanicals of the gin being used.
Question 6: Which cocktail is traditionally served in a salt-rimmed glass?
- Cosmopolitan
- Margarita (Correct answer)
- Gimlet
- Sidecar
Correct answer: Margarita
A Margarita is traditionally served in a glass with a salted rim, which enhances the tequila and lime flavors by contrasting the sour and sweet components.
The Margarita's salted rim is one of the most iconic presentations in cocktail culture. The salt contrasts with the sweet and sour elements of the drink, enhancing the overall flavor by suppressing bitterness and amplifying sweetness and citrus notes. To rim a glass, a lime wedge is rubbed around the outside edge and the glass is then pressed into a plate of kosher or margarita salt. It is important to note that many guests prefer a 'half rim' (salt on only half the glass) or no salt at all — always ask the guest their preference.
