Audiobook Production Audiobook Production MCQ 5 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What does the term 'noise gate' describe in audio processing?
- A hardware device that isolates the recording studio from street noise
- A dynamic processor that mutes the signal when it falls below a set threshold (Correct answer)
- A filter that removes specific frequency bands from background noise
- A plugin that analyzes and subtracts a noise profile from the recording
Correct answer: A dynamic processor that mutes the signal when it falls below a set threshold
A noise gate automatically silences audio that drops below a threshold, effectively removing low-level room noise between sentences.
Question 2: Which of the following best explains why audiobooks are typically mastered to -3 dBFS True Peak?
- It is a legal requirement under US copyright law for spoken word recordings
- It prevents inter-sample peaks from causing distortion on playback devices and streaming codecs (Correct answer)
- It ensures the file is louder than music tracks on the same platform
- It is the threshold at which most listeners find spoken word most intelligible
Correct answer: It prevents inter-sample peaks from causing distortion on playback devices and streaming codecs
True Peak limiting to -3 dBFS prevents inter-sample overs that can cause clipping when MP3 or AAC codecs reconstruct the waveform on playback.
Question 3: What is 'pickups' recording in the context of audiobook production?
- The initial full read-through of the manuscript before editing begins
- Short re-recording sessions to correct specific errors found during QC (Correct answer)
- The process of recording multiple narrators for ensemble casts
- Recording additional sound effects and music beds after narration is complete
Correct answer: Short re-recording sessions to correct specific errors found during QC
Pickups are targeted re-recordings of specific lines or passages identified during quality control review, rather than re-reading entire chapters.
Question 4: In audiobook metadata, what is the purpose of the 'retail audio sample'?
- It is the full first chapter provided free to potential buyers as a preview
- It is a 1–5 minute excerpt used by retailers to give buyers a preview of the narrator's performance (Correct answer)
- It is the narrator's audition recording submitted to the publisher for approval
- It is an accessibility transcript embedded in the audiobook file
Correct answer: It is a 1–5 minute excerpt used by retailers to give buyers a preview of the narrator's performance
The retail audio sample is a short excerpt, typically 1–5 minutes, that platforms like Audible display so potential buyers can preview the book before purchasing.
Question 5: What does 'ADR' stand for and how is it relevant to audiobook production?
- Automated Dialogue Replacement — re-recording lines to replace unusable original audio (Correct answer)
- Advanced Dynamic Range — a mastering standard for spoken word audio
- Asynchronous Data Recording — storing audio in non-real-time buffer segments
- Adaptive Dithering Reduction — minimizing quantization noise at low bit depths
Correct answer: Automated Dialogue Replacement — re-recording lines to replace unusable original audio
ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) is the studio technique of re-recording dialogue to replace flawed takes, directly applicable when narrators must fix problematic sections.
Question 6: Which equalization adjustment is most commonly used to add 'air' and presence to a recorded narrator's voice?
- A low-shelf boost around 100 Hz
- A high-shelf boost between 10–16 kHz (Correct answer)
- A mid-range cut around 1–2 kHz
- A notch filter at 60 Hz to remove hum
Correct answer: A high-shelf boost between 10–16 kHz
Boosting the high shelf above 10 kHz adds brightness and 'air' that helps the voice cut through and sound detailed and present.
Question 7: What is a 'finished room' in the context of choosing a home recording space for audiobooks?
- A room with professional acoustic panels installed by a certified acoustician
- An interior room with drywall, carpet, soft furnishings, and no exterior walls, minimizing ambient noise (Correct answer)
- A soundproofed studio with floating floor construction and double-pane glass
- Any room that has passed an ACX check for noise floor compliance
Correct answer: An interior room with drywall, carpet, soft furnishings, and no exterior walls, minimizing ambient noise
A 'finished room' such as a carpeted bedroom or walk-in closet with clothes provides natural absorption and interior walls that block external noise.
