ATAR - Australian Tertiary Admission Rank Role of VET Courses Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Which of the following is a primary role of a completed VET Certificate III or higher in relation to the ATAR?
- It guarantees a high ATAR score regardless of other subjects.
- It can serve as one of the inputs into a student's ATAR calculation or act as a standalone basis for tertiary admission. (Correct answer)
- It is only useful for direct entry into TAFE and is not considered by universities.
- It automatically adds a fixed 10 bonus points to the final ATAR.
Correct answer: It can serve as one of the inputs into a student's ATAR calculation or act as a standalone basis for tertiary admission.
Completed VET qualifications at Certificate III or higher can be used in two main ways for tertiary selection: they can be included as one of the subjects in the ATAR calculation, or some universities may consider them as a direct basis for admission, separate from the ATAR.
Question 2: A student in Queensland completes a Certificate III in Hospitality and another student completes a Certificate III in Business. Assuming both are completed in the same year, how will their VET qualifications be treated in the ATAR calculation?
- The Hospitality certificate will receive a higher scaled score due to its practical demands.
- The Business certificate will be scaled higher as it is considered more academic.
- They will both receive the same scaled score. (Correct answer)
- Only the VET course more relevant to the student's chosen university degree will be counted.
Correct answer: They will both receive the same scaled score.
In states like Queensland, completed VET qualifications at the same AQF level (e.g., Certificate III) are assigned the same scaled score for the ATAR calculation, regardless of the specific field of study, duration, or training provider.
Question 3: What is a key strategic advantage of undertaking a VET course for a student concerned about their ATAR?
- VET courses are always scaled higher than traditional academic subjects.
- Successfully completing a VET course exempts a student from the English language requirement for the ATAR.
- A strong result in a VET course can potentially replace a lower score from an ATAR-eligible academic subject in the final calculation. (Correct answer)
- All VET courses guarantee part-time employment, reducing financial stress during Year 12.
Correct answer: A strong result in a VET course can potentially replace a lower score from an ATAR-eligible academic subject in the final calculation.
One of the main benefits of a VET course is that if a student performs well, the resulting score can be used in their ATAR calculation, potentially replacing the score of a weaker academic subject and thus improving their overall rank.
Question 4: Beyond directly contributing to the ATAR calculation, what is another significant role of VET courses for senior secondary students?
- Providing an alternative pathway to tertiary education, even if the student's ATAR is not sufficient for direct entry. (Correct answer)
- Ensuring students do not have to sit any final year examinations.
- Fulfilling the compulsory science subject requirement for graduation.
- Offering internationally recognized qualifications valid for university entry in any country.
Correct answer: Providing an alternative pathway to tertiary education, even if the student's ATAR is not sufficient for direct entry.
VET courses provide students with nationally recognized qualifications and practical, work-related skills, which can create alternative pathways to university or other tertiary studies, especially if their ATAR doesn't meet the direct entry requirements for a desired course.
Question 5: A student is enrolled in a VET course as part of their senior studies. In many Australian states, what specific level of qualification must they typically complete for it to be considered for their ATAR calculation?
- Certificate I
- Certificate II
- Certificate III or higher (Correct answer)
- Any completed VET short course or module
Correct answer: Certificate III or higher
For a VET qualification to be considered as part of the ATAR calculation or as a basis for tertiary admission, students generally need to complete a full Certificate III, Certificate IV, or Diploma level qualification.
Question 6: Which statement accurately describes the primary purpose of VET courses within the senior school curriculum?
- To exclusively prepare students for immediate entry into university science and engineering degrees.
- To provide students with specific workplace-related skills and nationally recognised qualifications that can also contribute to their tertiary entrance rank. (Correct answer)
- To replace the need for all traditional classroom-based subjects with hands-on learning.
- To offer a less academically rigorous alternative that does not contribute to the ATAR in any way.
Correct answer: To provide students with specific workplace-related skills and nationally recognised qualifications that can also contribute to their tertiary entrance rank.
VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses are designed to equip students with practical, industry-relevant skills and lead to nationally recognised qualifications. A key role is that they can also be integrated into senior secondary certificates (like VCE, HSC, etc.) and contribute to a student's ATAR.
