ASP - Associate Safety Professional Fire Prevention and Protection Questions and Answers 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: A safety professional is conducting a fire risk assessment for a new data center. Which of the following would be considered a component of an active fire protection system?
- Fire-resistant walls and doors
- Intumescent paint on structural steel
- A clean agent fire suppression system (Correct answer)
- Compartmentation of server rooms
Correct answer: A clean agent fire suppression system
Active fire protection (AFP) systems are systems that require some amount of action or motion in order to work. A clean agent fire suppression system is an active system because it must detect a fire and then automatically release the agent to extinguish it. Fire-resistant walls, intumescent paint, and compartmentation are all forms of passive fire protection, which are built-in features that contain fire or slow its spread without any activation.
Question 2: According to the NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, a building used for the manufacturing and assembly of goods where the operations involve low or ordinary hazard materials is best classified under which occupancy type?
- Business Occupancy
- Industrial Occupancy (Correct answer)
- Storage Occupancy
- Mercantile Occupancy
Correct answer: Industrial Occupancy
NFPA 101 defines an industrial occupancy as a facility used for manufacturing, assembling, finishing, or other processing of goods. Buildings with low or ordinary hazard materials fall under the 'General Industrial Occupancy' subclassification. Business, Storage, and Mercantile occupancies have different definitions related to transactions, storage of goods, and display/sale of merchandise, respectively.
Question 3: During a workplace fire drill, an employee uses a portable fire extinguisher to address a small fire in a trash can containing paper and cardboard. Which class of fire is this?
- Class B
- Class K
- Class C
- Class A (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Class A
Class A fires involve ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, cloth, and some plastics. Class B fires involve flammable liquids and gases, Class C involves energized electrical equipment, and Class K involves cooking oils and fats.
Question 4: A safety manager is developing a fire prevention plan. Which of the following is the FIRST step in conducting a fire risk assessment?
- Evaluating the effectiveness of existing fire suppression systems
- Identifying people at risk during a fire event
- Identifying potential fire hazards, including ignition and fuel sources (Correct answer)
- Preparing an emergency evacuation plan and providing training
Correct answer: Identifying potential fire hazards, including ignition and fuel sources
The first step in a fire risk assessment is to identify all potential fire hazards. This involves identifying sources of ignition, fuel, and oxygen, which form the fire triangle. Only after hazards are identified can you effectively assess who is at risk, evaluate controls, and develop emergency plans.
Question 5: Which of the following portable fire extinguishers would be MOST effective and appropriate for a fire involving flammable liquids like gasoline and oil in an automotive repair shop?
- Pressurized water extinguisher
- Dry powder (specialist) extinguisher
- Foam extinguisher (Correct answer)
- Wet chemical extinguisher
Correct answer: Foam extinguisher
Foam extinguishers are effective on Class B fires (flammable liquids) because the foam creates a barrier on the surface of the liquid, cutting off the oxygen supply and smothering the fire. Water can spread flammable liquid fires. Specialist dry powder is for Class D (combustible metals), and wet chemical is primarily for Class K (cooking fires).
Question 6: A fire involving energized electrical equipment, such as a computer server, is classified as what type of fire?
- Class D
- Class A
- Class C (Correct answer)
- Class B
Correct answer: Class C
Class C fires are those that involve energized electrical equipment. Using a conductive extinguishing agent like water would create a severe shock hazard. Class A is for ordinary combustibles, Class B is for flammable liquids/gases, and Class D is for combustible metals.
