ASC Professional Standards & Competencies 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Which professional standard requires an avalanche guide to document observed snowpack conditions and forecasting decisions during a guided trip?
- Verbal debrief to clients only
- Written trip record or field log (Correct answer)
- Post-trip social media report
- Annual competency review submission
Correct answer: Written trip record or field log
Maintaining a written trip record or field log is a core professional standard that supports decision accountability and post-incident review.
Question 2: A professional avalanche educator notices a student consistently underestimates slope angle. The best professional response is to:
- Fail the student immediately
- Use an inclinometer together to calibrate visual estimation (Correct answer)
- Reassign the student to a lower-level course
- Ignore it if the student passes written tests
Correct answer: Use an inclinometer together to calibrate visual estimation
Practicing with an inclinometer against visual estimates is the standard instructional method for improving slope angle perception.
Question 3: Under AIARE professional standards, who bears primary responsibility for the go/no-go decision on a guided avalanche terrain route?
- The most experienced client
- The guide or trip leader (Correct answer)
- A consensus vote of the group
- The hiring organization's dispatcher
Correct answer: The guide or trip leader
AIARE standards place primary decision-making authority and responsibility with the credentialed guide or trip leader.
Question 4: When operating in avalanche terrain as a hired professional, which document most directly establishes the standard of care you are held to?
- Your personal risk tolerance statement
- Industry certification standards and course curricula (Correct answer)
- Client waiver forms
- Social media community norms
Correct answer: Industry certification standards and course curricula
Industry certification standards and published course curricula define the accepted standard of care for avalanche professionals.
Question 5: A professional guide identifies a significant red flag (recent natural avalanche activity) but the client group insists on continuing. The correct professional action is to:
- Proceed if all clients sign a verbal acknowledgment
- Modify or cancel the route regardless of client pressure (Correct answer)
- Take a group vote and follow the majority
- Continue if the client is paying a premium rate
Correct answer: Modify or cancel the route regardless of client pressure
Red flags indicating elevated avalanche hazard require route modification or cancellation; client pressure does not override professional safety obligations.
Question 6: The 'leader-follower' dynamic in professional guiding most commonly creates avalanche risk when:
- The leader moves too slowly for the group
- Followers spread out too widely on low-angle terrain
- Followers mimic the leader's route without independent hazard assessment (Correct answer)
- The leader carries the group's rescue equipment
Correct answer: Followers mimic the leader's route without independent hazard assessment
Followers copying a leader's exact path without personal hazard awareness creates a false sense of safety and suppresses individual risk judgment.
Question 7: Which practice best demonstrates professional competency in avalanche terrain management during a multi-day expedition?
- Using only the first day's snowpack observations for all decisions
- Re-evaluating conditions each day against current regional forecasts (Correct answer)
- Relying solely on client reports of conditions from the previous year
- Avoiding all terrain steeper than 25 degrees throughout
Correct answer: Re-evaluating conditions each day against current regional forecasts
Daily re-evaluation integrating field observations with updated regional forecasts reflects the dynamic decision-making competency expected of avalanche professionals.
