Architecture and Design Building Codes and Regulations 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Which organization publishes the International Building Code (IBC) used as the model code in most U.S. states?
- ASHRAE
- ICC (International Code Council) (Correct answer)
- AIA (American Institute of Architects)
- NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)
Correct answer: ICC (International Code Council)
The International Code Council (ICC) publishes the IBC, which is adopted (with amendments) by most U.S. states and jurisdictions.
Question 2: What is 'occupancy classification' in building codes?
- The maximum number of occupants allowed in a building
- A category that defines the intended use of a building and determines applicable code requirements (Correct answer)
- The percentage of time a building is occupied
- The licensed use classification on a building permit
Correct answer: A category that defines the intended use of a building and determines applicable code requirements
Occupancy classification (e.g., A for Assembly, B for Business, R for Residential) defines a building's use and triggers specific fire safety, egress, and structural requirements.
Question 3: According to ADA standards, the minimum clear width of an accessible route is:
- 30 inches
- 36 inches (Correct answer)
- 44 inches
- 60 inches
Correct answer: 36 inches
ADA Standards for Accessible Design require accessible routes to have a minimum clear width of 36 inches, with 60-inch passing spaces where routes are less than 60 inches wide.
Question 4: What does 'fire-resistance rating' of a building element indicate?
- The temperature at which the material ignites
- The duration (in hours) a structural element resists collapse or fire penetration in a standard fire test (Correct answer)
- The flame spread index of a surface material
- The smoke development index of a material
Correct answer: The duration (in hours) a structural element resists collapse or fire penetration in a standard fire test
Fire-resistance rating is the time in hours that a building element (wall, column, floor) withstands a standard ASTM E119 fire test before structural failure or heat transmission.
Question 5: The 'means of egress' in building codes consists of how many components?
- Two: exit access and exit
- Three: exit access, exit, and exit discharge (Correct answer)
- Four: corridor, stair, exit door, and public way
- One: the exit stair only
Correct answer: Three: exit access, exit, and exit discharge
The means of egress system has three parts: exit access (path within the floor to the exit), exit (protected path such as an enclosed stair), and exit discharge (path from exit to public way).
Question 6: What is the maximum riser height for a standard stairway under the IBC?
- 6 inches
- 7 inches
- 7¾ inches (Correct answer)
- 8¼ inches
Correct answer: 7¾ inches
The IBC limits stair risers to a maximum height of 7¾ inches (with a minimum of 4 inches) for occupiable spaces.
