AQT Navigation & Air Traffic Control — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What are the classes of airspace in the US National Airspace System?
- Class A, B, C, D, E (controlled) and Class G (uncontrolled) (Correct answer)
- Only Class A and Class B
- Three classes: high, medium, and low
- Class 1 through Class 10
Correct answer: Class A, B, C, D, E (controlled) and Class G (uncontrolled)
US airspace is classified alphabetically: A (18,000'+, IFR only), B (major airports), C (medium airports), D (smaller towered airports), E (controlled but less restrictive), and G (uncontrolled).
Question 2: What is a VOR and how is it used in navigation?
- A ground-based radio navigation aid that provides bearing information to or from the station, used for en route and approach navigation (Correct answer)
- A type of radar system
- A GPS satellite
- A weather observation station
Correct answer: A ground-based radio navigation aid that provides bearing information to or from the station, used for en route and approach navigation
VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) stations transmit radio signals that allow aircraft receivers to determine their magnetic bearing (radial) from the station, forming the backbone of traditional airway navigation.
Question 3: What is IFR and when is it required?
- Instrument Flight Rules: required when weather conditions are below VFR minimums, and always required in Class A airspace (Correct answer)
- Only during nighttime
- Only for military aircraft
- Only when flying over water
Correct answer: Instrument Flight Rules: required when weather conditions are below VFR minimums, and always required in Class A airspace
IFR requires pilots to navigate using instruments and follow ATC instructions. It is mandatory in Class A airspace (above 18,000') and when visibility or cloud clearance falls below VFR minimums.
Question 4: What is RNAV (Area Navigation)?
- A navigation method allowing aircraft to fly any desired flight path using onboard navigation systems rather than following ground-based radio aids (Correct answer)
- A type of radar system
- A manual navigation technique using paper charts only
- A radio communication frequency
Correct answer: A navigation method allowing aircraft to fly any desired flight path using onboard navigation systems rather than following ground-based radio aids
RNAV uses GPS, inertial reference systems, or DME/DME to allow direct routing between any two points, not limited to flying from one VOR to another, increasing efficiency and airspace capacity.
Question 5: What is a NOTAM?
- A Notice to Air Missions providing time-critical information about hazards, restrictions, or changes affecting flight operations (Correct answer)
- A type of flight plan
- A maintenance logbook entry
- A weather forecast
Correct answer: A Notice to Air Missions providing time-critical information about hazards, restrictions, or changes affecting flight operations
NOTAMs alert pilots to temporary or permanent hazards, airspace restrictions, navigation aid outages, runway closures, and other changes that could affect flight safety, and must be checked during preflight planning.
Question 6: What is ADS-B and how has it changed air traffic surveillance?
- Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast: aircraft automatically transmit GPS position to ATC and other aircraft, providing more accurate tracking than radar (Correct answer)
- A type of autopilot system
- A fuel management system
- An engine monitoring device
Correct answer: Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast: aircraft automatically transmit GPS position to ATC and other aircraft, providing more accurate tracking than radar
ADS-B uses GPS to determine aircraft position and continuously broadcasts it. This provides more accurate position data than traditional radar, better coverage in remote areas, and enables traffic awareness for equipped aircraft.
