During rapid palatal expansion (RPE), a midline diastema typically appears and then closes spontaneously because:
- A. The teeth drift apart permanently
- B. Suture opening pushes incisors apart and roots uprighting closes the diastema
- C. The frenulum is always cut during RPE
- D. Bone fills in between the upper central incisors
Answer: B. Suture opening pushes incisors apart and roots uprighting closes the diastema
As the suture opens, the upper central incisors tip apart, but the transeptal fibers pull the crowns back together as the suture ossifies.
What is the moment-to-force (M/F) ratio approximately required to produce pure translation (bodily movement) of a tooth?
- A. 0:1
- B. 5:1
- C. 10:1
- D. 17:1
Answer: C. 10:1
An M/F ratio of about 10:1 counteracts tipping and produces bodily (translational) tooth movement.
Which tool does the ABO use to objectively grade the quality of completed treatment outcomes?
- A. Discrepancy Index (DI)
- B. Cast-Radiograph Evaluation (CRE)
- C. PAR Index
- D. Bolton Analysis
Answer: B. Cast-Radiograph Evaluation (CRE)
The Cast-Radiograph Evaluation scores the finished result against measurable objective criteria.
A Class II elastics configuration runs from the upper canine to the lower first molar. What is the primary skeletal effect?
- A. Mandibular retrusion
- B. Maxillary advancement
- C. Mandibular advancement and/or maxillary retrusion
- D. Transverse expansion
Answer: C. Mandibular advancement and/or maxillary retrusion
Class II elastics apply a forward force on the lower arch and a backward force on the upper arch, promoting mandibular advancement and/or maxillary retrusion.

ABO Board Certification Flashcards
π¦· How do you become ABO board certified?
An orthodontist becomes board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics by passing two exams: the Written Examination and the Scenario-based Clinical Examination. Certification is voluntary, and certified orthodontists must also pay an annual fee to keep Board Certified status.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTπ When can an orthodontic resident take the ABO written exam?
A resident may sit for the ABO Written Examination once they have completed at least 18 months of a CODA-accredited orthodontic program by the exam date. Residents in an approved Advanced Standing program may also apply.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTπ When and where is the ABO written exam held?
The Written Examination is given once a year in April at Pearson VUE Professional Centers in the U.S. and Canada. The next sitting is April 6, 2027, with registration running from November 2, 2026 to January 7, 2027.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTπ What is the ABO written exam pass rate?
ABO-published pass rates ranged from 90% to 99% between 2019 and 2026. In 2026, 460 candidates took the written exam and 95% passed.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTπ― How is the ABO written exam scored?
It is criterion-referenced, not curved. Each candidate is measured against a fixed standard based on how difficult each question is for a minimally competent examinee, and that standard sits on a benchmark scale the ABO updates every five years.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTπ§ What is the ABO Scenario-based Clinical Examination?
It is the second step after the written exam. It tests clinical knowledge and critical thinking through case scenarios at Pearson VUE centers worldwide, and it uses ABO tools such as the Cast-Radiograph Evaluation and the Case Management Form. The electronic CRE (e-CRE) component was dropped in 2024.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTβ³ Is there a deadline for the clinical exam after you pass the written exam?
No. According to the ABO, a passed Written Examination does not expire, and there is no time limit for completing the Clinical Examination. Seats are limited, though, so register early.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTπ How often must ABO certification be renewed?
Time-limited ABO certificates, issued since 1998, must be renewed every 10 years. The renewal process can start up to 36 months before the certificate expires. In September 2026 the ABO announced a planned move to a 5-year self-directed continuous-learning model called MyABO, which is still being developed.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTπ» What is on the ABO certification renewal exam?
The usual route is an online Board Case Exam with 50 multiple-choice questions and a 90-minute time limit, plus 12 continuing-education credits from AJO-DO exams. The alternative is a mail-in Case Report Examination of one case with a Discrepancy Index of 10 or higher.
START ABO PRACTICE TESTποΈ When was the American Board of Orthodontics founded?
The ABO was founded in 1929 as the first specialty board in dentistry. It is partnered with the American Association of Orthodontists, and the NCRDSCB recognizes it as the national certifying board for Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
