  1. Some apples are mangoes. No mango is a grape. All grapes are fruits. Which is definitely true?

Answer: Some fruits are not mangoes

Grapes are fruits and no mango is a grape — those grape-fruits are not mangoes. Therefore some fruits are not mangoes.

  2. If all squares are rectangles, and some rectangles are rhombuses, can we conclude that some squares are rhombuses?

    Answer: No, not necessarily

'Some rectangles are rhombuses' does not specify which rectangles — they may or may not be squares. We cannot conclude some squares are rhombuses.

  3. No bird is a mammal. All eagles are birds. Conclusion I: No eagle is a mammal. Conclusion II: Some birds are eagles.

    Answer: Both I and II

No bird is mammal + all eagles are birds → no eagle is mammal (I). All eagles are birds → some birds are eagles by conversion (II). Both follow.

  4. Statements: All chairs are tables. All tables are cupboards. Conclusion: All chairs are cupboards.

    Answer: True

All chairs → tables → cupboards. By transitivity, all chairs are cupboards.

  5. Some doctors are engineers. All engineers are scientists. No scientist is an artist. Which conclusion follows?

    Answer: Some doctors are scientists

Some doctors are engineers. All engineers are scientists → those doctor-engineers are also scientists. So some doctors are scientists.

  6. All politicians are liars. Ravi is not a liar. What can be concluded about Ravi?

Answer: Ravi is not a politician

All politicians are liars → contrapositive: if not a liar, then not a politician. Ravi is not a liar, so Ravi is not a politician.
