ALT - Alternative Learning Teacher Professional Roles and Ethics Questions and Answers 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: An alternative learning teacher is approached by a student who confides that they are facing food insecurity at home. According to the professional code of ethics, which of the following is the teacher's primary responsibility?
- Connecting the student and their family with school or community resources. (Correct answer)
- Providing the student with money to buy food for the week.
- Sharing the student's situation with other teachers to brainstorm solutions.
- Focusing only on the student's academic performance in the classroom.
Correct answer: Connecting the student and their family with school or community resources.
The educator's primary ethical responsibility is to the student's well-being and to make reasonable efforts to protect them from conditions harmful to learning. Connecting the student with established resources is the most appropriate and professional way to provide support without overstepping professional boundaries. While other options may be well-intentioned, they can create dependency, violate confidentiality, or neglect the teacher's broader duty of care.
Question 2: A teacher in an alternative high school program notices a colleague frequently making disparaging remarks about students' past behaviors and academic struggles in the staff lounge. Which ethical principle is the colleague primarily violating?
- Commitment to the profession
- Commitment to the student (Correct answer)
- Commitment to the community
- Commitment to personal financial gain
Correct answer: Commitment to the student
The National Education Association's Code of Ethics, Principle I, emphasizes commitment to the student. This includes not intentionally exposing a student to embarrassment or disparagement. Making negative remarks violates the core duty to believe in the worth and dignity of each student and to protect them from harm.
Question 3: Mr. Evans, an alternative learning teacher, is creating a social media page to share class projects. To maintain professional and ethical boundaries, which of the following actions should he take?
- Invite students to 'friend' his personal social media account to build rapport.
- Use a private, invitation-only platform and obtain parental consent for all student participation. (Correct answer)
- Post student photos freely, as the page is for a positive educational purpose.
- Share anecdotes about specific students' progress, changing their names for privacy.
Correct answer: Use a private, invitation-only platform and obtain parental consent for all student participation.
Maintaining professional boundaries is critical. Using a dedicated, private platform for educational purposes and requiring parental consent respects student privacy and creates a clear line between personal and professional interactions. Friending students on personal accounts, posting images without consent, and sharing even anonymized anecdotes can lead to ethical violations concerning privacy and dual relationships.
Question 4: Which of the following scenarios represents an ethical dilemma involving a conflict between the teacher's responsibility to the student and their responsibility to a colleague?
- A teacher must decide whether to report a student who cheated on an exam.
- A teacher is asked by a parent to change their child's legitimate grade.
- A teacher observes a colleague failing to implement a student's legally required IEP accommodations. (Correct answer)
- A teacher needs to decide on the most effective instructional strategy for a struggling reader.
Correct answer: A teacher observes a colleague failing to implement a student's legally required IEP accommodations.
This scenario creates a classic ethical dilemma. The teacher has an ethical and legal responsibility to ensure the student receives their required accommodations (commitment to the student). However, reporting a colleague could strain professional relationships (commitment to the profession). This situation requires navigating the conflict between loyalty to a peer and the primary obligation to the student's welfare and legal rights.
Question 5: A key professional role for a teacher in an alternative learning environment is to act as a liaison. What does this role primarily entail?
- Exclusively managing all communication between the school and external agencies.
- Serving as the sole disciplinarian for students in the program.
- Connecting and communicating with students, parents, and other staff to provide a continuum of support. (Correct answer)
- Organizing all extracurricular activities and school-wide events.
Correct answer: Connecting and communicating with students, parents, and other staff to provide a continuum of support.
In alternative education settings, the teacher often serves as a central point of contact, facilitating communication and collaboration between the student, their family, school counselors, and other support staff to ensure the student's academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs are met.
Question 6: According to professional ethics, when is it permissible for an educator to disclose confidential information about a student?
- When another student asks about their classmate's absence.
- When discussing the student's progress with a personal friend.
- When it serves a compelling professional purpose or is required by law. (Correct answer)
- When the teacher believes it would be helpful for the student's parents to know.
Correct answer: When it serves a compelling professional purpose or is required by law.
Professional codes of ethics strictly limit the disclosure of confidential student information. The widely accepted standard is that such information should only be shared when there is a compelling professional reason (e.g., consulting with a school counselor to support the student) or when legally mandated (e.g., reporting suspected abuse or neglect).
