Ableton Certified User Effects, Devices, & Signal Flow 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What does the 'Dry/Wet' knob control on an Ableton audio effect?
- The output volume of the track
- The balance between the unprocessed and processed signal (Correct answer)
- The tempo-sync rate of the effect
- The input gain before the effect chain
Correct answer: The balance between the unprocessed and processed signal
The Dry/Wet knob blends the original (dry) signal with the effect-processed (wet) signal.
Question 2: In Ableton Live, which device type is placed on a Return track?
- Instrument Rack
- Audio Effect (Correct answer)
- MIDI Effect
- Max for Live Instrument
Correct answer: Audio Effect
Return tracks use Audio Effects to process signals sent from multiple source tracks via Send knobs.
Question 3: What is the primary difference between Ableton's Reverb and Echo devices?
- Reverb creates discrete repeats; Echo simulates room ambience
- Echo creates discrete repeats; Reverb simulates room ambience (Correct answer)
- Both simulate room ambience but at different frequencies
- Reverb is MIDI-only; Echo works on audio
Correct answer: Echo creates discrete repeats; Reverb simulates room ambience
Echo generates rhythmic delay repeats while Reverb simulates the diffuse reflections of a physical space.
Question 4: When 'Lock' is enabled on an Ableton device, what happens?
- The device's parameters are frozen and cannot be automated
- The device stays visible in the Detail View even when another track is selected (Correct answer)
- The device is bypassed on playback
- The device is linked to the Master track's tempo
Correct answer: The device stays visible in the Detail View even when another track is selected
Locking a device keeps it pinned in the Detail View so you can edit it while clicking on other tracks.
Question 5: Which Ableton device lets you apply sidechain compression so a kick drum ducks a bass synth?
- Gate
- Compressor (Correct answer)
- Multiband Dynamics
- Limiter
Correct answer: Compressor
Ableton's Compressor has a built-in sidechain section that lets it respond to an external audio source instead of the signal being compressed.
Question 6: What does enabling 'Link' between two Delay devices in a chain accomplish?
- Both delays share the same send level
- Changing the time on one automatically updates the other to match (Correct answer)
- Both delays use identical feedback values
- The delays run in parallel instead of series
Correct answer: Changing the time on one automatically updates the other to match
Linking delay times ties both channels together so adjusting one updates the other simultaneously.
Question 7: In Ableton's signal flow, where does a MIDI Effect sit relative to an instrument?
- After the instrument in the chain
- Before the instrument in the chain (Correct answer)
- On a parallel bus alongside the instrument
- On the Return track feeding the instrument
Correct answer: Before the instrument in the chain
MIDI Effects process the MIDI data before it reaches the instrument, shaping notes, chords, or timing upstream.
